Deduplication solutions are to be used in greater numbers on primary storage systems as the year progresses.

Dave Raffo, senior news director of the Search Storage website, explained that businesses are looking for new ways to tackle the problem of data storage growth, with this option being one potential solution for companies to consider.

He noted that there has already been a move in this direction following promotional work for providers of the technology.

"In 2010, vendors set the stage for extending data deduplication and compression from backup to primary data," Mr Raffo said.

Some of the benefits of using deduplication solutions were outlined in a recent article from IT Business Edge commentator Arthur Cole.

The columnist stated that the technology can help IT departments to make the most of their finite resources as data volumes continue to grow at a rapid pace, leading to many chief information officers investing in the solutions.
