OpenNebula 5.8 Release – On the Cutting-Edge
February 26, 2019
OpenNebula 5.8,
code-named “Edge”, is the fifth update release of the OpenNebula 5
series. Almost every component of OpenNebula has been designed to target
usability and functional improvements driven by the needs of its thousands of
users including industry leaders like Akamai, King, Booking, Runtastic, CA
Technologies, Blackberry, Hitachi Data Services, and Santander Bank, as well
as, research and supercomputing centers like Harvard University, FermiLab,
European Space Agency and SURFsara. As an enterprise-class product, OpenNebula
offers a simple upgrade path to get to the most current version.
This new version has taken aim at bringing lightweight and fast processing capabilities of cloud computing to the edge. While the focus in the market is pointing heavily towards dramatically reducing latency, OpenNebula 5.8 Edge delivers new key cutting-edge capabilities. Firstly, this new version provides complete, native support for LXD containers. Whether optimizing for an edge environment, or simply looking to reap the benefits of LXD’s bare-metal performance and its very high workload density, this new support makes creating and managing cloud resources on the edge that much simpler. Right alongside this, OpenNebula Edge “unlocks” the ability to use bare-metal providers, like AWS and Packet, to build remote clusters – with one simple host-provisioning command. Creating and managing a Disaggregated Data Center environment is now encapsulated in a few button-clicks. This new version will also include scalability improvements across pool management, monitoring, and the GUI, making sure that managing your clouds remains simple and effective.
OpenNebula Systems will be hosting its eighth annual OpenNebula Conference in Barcelona, Spain on October 21-22, 2019 – a summit featuring user sessions across various industries, technical hands-on workshops, and knowledge-sharing amongst the open-source community. Additionally, as OpenNebula integrates with VMware infrastructures, OpenNebula Systems will also be “Partner Ready” exhibitors at VMworld US (San Francisco, Aug. 25-29, 2019) and VMworld EU (Barcelona, Nov. 4-7, 2019). Check OpenNebula.org for detailed release notes and guidance on how to download the code.
