In a move to extend green IT, researchers in New York are trying to figure out how to power cloud computing networks with servers that rely on wind or solar power, according to Renewables Biz’s website…

The news source said that the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, along with Clarkson University, Advanced Micro Devices, Hewlett-Packard and other private businesses are hoping to demonstrate how a network of wind and solar powered data centers could start a new model for renewable energy and data center operations.

Cloud computing is key to this project, as sites could be installed at wind turbine developments in a wide geographic region. If the wind is blowing one way, the Renewables Biz said the processing would be routed there. If a different location is generating more power, the processing would be sent there. About $674,000 is being invested in this project, according to the news source.

Bloomberg said Tata Consultancy Services, Asia’s largest information-services provider, is increasing its focus on renewable energy technology and cloud computing, as the company said it expects both to be the growth engines of the future.

It is estimated by the International Energy Agency that governments throughout the globe have allocated $521 billion over the next five years in green stimulus spending to promote more efficient industries.
