ISI Group analyst Brian Marshall today weighs in with some thoughts on cloud computing after attending the first day of the Ethernet Technology Summit taking place this week. For those of you unfamiliar, the summit is an annual event attended by “several hundred mostly senior level engineering staff and mid-level management” from “leading companies” such as Google (GOOG), Comcast (CMCSA), Cisco Systems (CSCO), Dell and startup Big Switch, among others, “to exchange thoughts on future network topology design.” Overall, he sees some progress by Cisco, and opportunities for Juniper Networks (JNPR):
We came away convinced that the Ethernet market and technology dynamics will continue to evolve very rapidly and could create greater opportunity for share shifts in the coming years. While more open models for switching and routing platforms create risk for incumbents, we believe CSCO [NEUTRAL] is adapting to emerging industry trends with skill (e.g., ACI or application-centric infrastructure with the Nexus 9k, etc.) and we continue to warm up to the name…
In our view, both Arista Networks [pending IPO: ANET] in datacenter Ethernet switching and Huawei [private company] in carrier Ethernet continue to show solid momentum. Additionally, JNPR (STRONG BUY, $30 PT) steadily penetrates more of the datacenter market with its family of switches (up ~46% y/y in Mar-14)…
