Iomega Corporation recently unveiled the business-centric Iomega StorCenter ix2, a two-bay Network Attached Storage (NAS) that sports an impressive array of capabilities. The expected RAID 1 (mirrored) data protection aside, the StorCenter ix2 also comes with cloud computing and video surveillance abilities that are ideal for SMBs or remote offices.

Under its hood, the StorCenter ix2 NAS runs on EMC LifeLine, a fully-developed Linux operating system Iomega says is typically available only for enterprise-level customers. The StorCenter is also VMware- and XenServer-certified for virtual desktop implementations, works with Active Directory, can be used for iSCSI storage and also comes with native Time Machine support. The device is managed from a Web interface that allows for a setup process that doesn’t require a CD…

Small businesses and SOHOs alike will appreciate the inclusion of Iomega QuikProtect backup software that makes it possible to perform simplified PC and Mac computer backups, while support for the Iomega Link app for iOS devices provides a convenient remote iPhone and iPad connection to the onboard data.

In a prepared statement, Jonathan Huberman, president of Iomega Corporation, outlined the company’s broad objectives: "Our objective at Iomega is to bring the advantages and capabilities of network storage solutions with enterprise-level applications to small and mid-sized businesses in professional services and manufacturing as well as distributed enterprises in retail, banking and other vertical industries."

What really caught my attention was the out-of-the-box support for up to five IP camera installations; universal plug-and-play network cameras by Axis, Bosch and Panasonic are supported. Moreover, SMBs can configure the StorCenter ix2 NAS to utilize their choice of cloud-based backup using Mozy, Amazon S3 or EMC Atmos-enabled cloud backup services. For even greater reliability, Iomega says that it is easy to set up device-to-device data replication between two Iomega StorCenter units, a feature that according to Huberman effectively results in the creation of a private cloud.

The Iomega StorCenter ix2 will be available worldwide in February 2012, and will be sold in three different models: a diskless unit, partially populated with a single HDD (1TB, 2TB or 3TB of total storage capacity), or fully populated with two HDDs (2TB, 4TB or 6TB of total storage capacity). The diskless model of the StorCenter ix2 will have an MSRP of $199.99 (subject to change), which is a bargain considering its long list of capabilities.

Based on its competitive price and the impressive list of features, I would consider the StorCenter ix2 as one of the frontrunners of the highly competitive NAS market.
