July 1, 2011 marks the start of a new era for Federal information technology. That’s the day that the Federal Community Cloud officially opened for business.  With a characteristic low key change on the Apps.gov website, GSA Infrastructure-as-a-Service BPA was opened for ordering. This heralds the awarding of Authority to Operate (ATO) approval for the following vendors:

Web Hosting

  • CGI Federal
  • Computer Literacy World
  • Eyak Technology
  • Computer Technologies Consultant
  • Savvis Federal Systems

Virtual Machine

  • Autonomic Resources
  • Carahsoft Technology Corp
  • CGI Federal
  • Computer Literacy World
  • AT&T
  • Eyak Technology
  • General Dynamics information Technology
  • Verizon Federal
  • Computer Technologies Consultant
  • Savvis Federal

Storage

  • Apptis
  • Computer Literacy World
  • AT&T
  • Eyak Technology
  • Insight Public Sector, Inc
  • Computer Technologies Consultant

Another important aspect of this new announcement is the fact that issuance of an ATO shows that the vendor has completed the Assessment & Authorization (A&A) process at the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) Moderate Impact Data security level, as administered by GSA. This is a dramatic improvement over the earlier Apps.gov offerings which had no FISMA certifications.  This important difference is expected to lead to a much more rapid adoption of IaaS than was seen with the earlier SaaS offerings.
