Fujitsu Ltd. said Monday that it has developed a server for cloud computing systems that is four times as fast as conventional machines.

The new server pools central processing units, hard-disk drives and other hardware components, linking them together via high-speed interconnects. Fujitsu clocked the input/output throughput at roughly 2 gigabits per second, compared with the 0.5 gigabit per second of conventional servers…

The resource pool technology allows for flexible configuration of systems to meet customer needs, such as adjusting the number of CPUs and hard drives used depending on demand. And if a piece of hardware breaks down, simply switching connections can substitute for replacing parts, reducing maintenance costs.

Amid growth in cloud computing, there is demand for high-performance servers that can process huge sets of data. Fujitsu is targeting a commercial launch of its new technology in fiscal 2013.
