The inaugural Cloud Law event taking place in London November 25th with participating enterprise general counsel and professional advisors is set to address the regulatory complexity confronting cloud computing in Europe. With an extensive panel of experts, the event aims to navigate enterprises through the complex regulatory and legal issues arising from outsourcing and untangling the European Data Protection Directive.

“The long term interests of all stakeholders in the development of cloud computing are only served if those with shared values come together and agree clearer rules of the road than is currently the case,” commented Dervish Tayyip, Assistant General Counsel of Microsoft who will be speaking at the conference. “It is a solvable problem and in the interests of all those stakeholders that we start now. The event will throw a spotlight on the privacy and security concerns of capital markets seeking to outsource critical-business information in the cloud. It will also assess how cloud computing which could deliver significant cost efficiency and innovation for the healthcare system, nevertheless raises issues for compliance with patient confidentiality…

Harmonized standards “would go some way to improving and enhancing buyer confidence, which will in turn accelerate adoption of cloud services leading to a genuinely competitive marketplace of cloud services,” commented Phil Dawson, CEO at Skyscape. “This has already been proven to be the case with the UK government’s approach to cloud computing”

Stephanie Liston, Senior Counsel, Charles Russell LLP will provide an insight into how the US Patriot Act potentially conflicts with European legislation and whether propositions for confining data to geographies is realistic.

Other key questions the conference will cover include: Why should small and medium businesses turn to the cloud? Why is encryption the key to your data safety? Who is responsible for data governance in the cloud and how should companies address the privacy requirements and policies for data storage? How should enterprises manage cyber security threats? What does the right to privacy entail in the cloud?

Cloud Law will provide outstanding content, crafted into a one-day conference producing a solution-oriented debate capable of driving policy changes for the legal and regulatory barriers resulting from cloud computing.

Speakers include Phil Dawson, CEO, Skyscape, Anthony Foy, CEO, Workshare, Dervish Tayyip, Assistant General Counsel, Microsoft, Conor Ward, Consultant, Hogan Lovells International LLP, Doug Clark, Cloud Leader, IBM UK & Ireland, Maurice Woolf, General Counsel, Interoute Group, Frank Jennings, Partner, DMH Stallard LLP, Mark Bailey, Partner, Speechly Bircham amongst others.
