While the environment is heavily impacted by online use with things such as data centers leaving a big carbon footprint, EarthTalk said cloud computing could help move green IT forward by centralizing things a big more. Individual purchases aside, EarthTalk said the cloud is very important for the future…

"The creation and management of more efficient data centers by the major online hubs – especially as we enter the age of “cloud” computing whereby most of the software, content and services we look to our computers for resides online and is served to us as-needed – is what can have the biggest impact," EarthTalk said, adding that companies like Google, Facebook and Microsoft have helped the cloud move forward already.

EarthTalk said Google has been the real leader in building green cloud data centers and powering them with renewable energy. The company has used 7.4 kilowatt hours worth of energy annually per user, which EarthTalk said is extremely low.

According to a September 2011 study by Pike Research, cloud computing will cut data center consumption by 31 percent by 2020. Pike senior analyst Eric Woods said the reduction of energy will be even more significant than the amount of growth the industry will have and said the cloud will lead to "unprecedented efficiencies."
