Firms or individuals tempted by the prospect of desktop virtualisation have been advised efficient data management is the key to successful adoption of the technology.

Robin Birtstone, writing for the Register, said implementing the capacity to safely store hundreds or thousands of pieces of information is a necessary step.

He noted getting the size of a data centre is important and suggested planning its arrival and initial operations is another wise move.

"Getting the data to and from the storage area network to the server quickly enough can be a challenging task. Servers need low-latency data access for performance purposes," Mr Birtstone stated.

Speed in general must be a crucial factor in any data management strategy, as it has a direct impact on performance.

Rick Sherman, founder of consultancy Athena IT Solutions, recently told Smart Data Collective that one thing to avoid is data errors, as this can have grave consequences for businesses that rely on the trust of customers.
