Business leaders are changing their long-term goals for desktop virtualisation as a result of the rise to prominence of cloud computing technology…

David Wright, vice-president of technology services at VMware, has told a Software Industry Research Board roundtable that the rules of desktop infrastructure are being changed, reported CloudPro.

He noted that one of the key trends resulting from the take-up of cloud-based solutions is the return to popularity of virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI).

"We’re starting to see interest in VDI again. Having created a private cloud environment, enterprises are looking to drop the desktop on top, so individual users can log onto their desktop from [anywhere]," Mr Wright stated.

The expert noted one benefit of this is that it reduces the potential for losing data, as it is all held centrally rather than on memory sticks or laptops.

A study by Spiceworks this week found that almost half of small and medium-sized businesses are now using cloud computing.
