Cloud computing is one of the leading technological developments that will help transform the IT industry over the next decade, a new report has forecast.

According to a study by Gartner, cloud computing is one of four main trends that will develop the economy over the next ten years – the others being the business impact of social computing, context aware computing and pattern-based strategy.

Peter Sondergaard, senior vice-president of Gartner and global head of research, said: "[Cloud computing] will change vertical industries, making the impact of the internet on the music industry look like a minor bleep."

He added that the growth of context aware computing will have a "profound" impact on organisations, as it enables the creation of software and services that blend data, text, graphics, audio and video with location, language and desires.

The report also forecast that global enterprise IT will reach US$2.5 trillion (NZ$3.3 trillion) in 2011 – a 3.1 per cent increase on 2010.

A recent Storage Networking World report found that 36 per cent of IT professionals think hybrid clouds can make their data centres more efficient.
