Cloud Computing: Microsoft heir apparent, a UWM grad, seen as ‘wise choice’

As he walked into the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee computer science lab to begin his day, department chairman K. Vairavan had to wonder: Why was a sleeping bag rolled up on the floor?  The answer came quickly: Satya Nadella had left it there. The graduate student had spent the last few nights sleeping in the lab on the seventh floor of UWM’s engineering and math sciences building so he could spend more time on his research.

More than two decades later, the UWM graduate is widely believed to be next in line to head one of the world’s largest and best-known companies: Microsoft Corp.  Nadella, now the company’s enterprise and cloud computing boss, could be named as early as Monday to replace Steve Ballmer as Microsoft’s third chief executive officer. If he is tapped for the job, it will end months of Wall Street speculation and produce bragging rights for his local alma mater…

"This may be the biggest event for UWM in my time in Milwaukee," said Michael Lovell, UWM’s chancellor, who came to the school in 2008 as dean of the College of Engineering & Applied Sciences and a professor of mechanical engineering…
