Cloud computing is at the forefront of a number of new technologies that have the potential to allow chief information officers to transform IT provision within their organisations.

According to Mark McDonald, group vice president and head of research for Gartner Executive Programs, the offerings are part of a wider evolution of IT services that are available to businesses.

"New lighter-weight technologies – such as cloud computing, software-as-a-service and social networks – and IT models enable the chief information officer to redefine IT, giving it a greater focus on growth and strategic impact," he stated in comments reported on the My Broadband website.

Mr McDonald said many organisations could benefit from a greater concentration on these two areas.

Earlier this week, James Hall, marketing director at infrastructure optimisation company Teneo, told the Channel Web site that companies preparing to make the switch to cloud computing should make sure they are properly prepared to do so.
