Cloud Computing: Facilities Work Order Management as a Service
November 29, 2011SaaS / BpaaS Adoption
This is the continuation of my series of articles on Industry SaaS . This term ‘Industry SaaS’ can be used interchangeably with BpaaS (Business Process as a Service). However, the term ‘Industry SaaS’ meaning Software as a Service meant for a specific industry need is stressed for wider attention, as the term BpaaS has yet to mature with a clear definition.
Facilities Job/Work Order Management
Most large manufacturing enterprises will have a facilities division that is responsible for various infrastructure jobs within the enterprise whether in the office space or in plants or warehouses. Typical activities conducted by the facilities department are like building a new room inside the premises or fixing an existing infrastructure.
Most of the work done by the facilities department is termed as jobs and most enterprises have a job management system to track these jobs for completion and report on them. This application is generally referred to as Facilities Job Management application. The term ‘Job’ & ‘Work Order’ are used interchangeably in this context…
- These systems typically maintain a master list of all the plants, warehouses and other facilities managed by the application
- Each job will be represented by a unique number and will have other attributes, for example, which facility the job is applicable to and the description of the job and other parameters.
- These jobs can be assigned an owner and also a point of contact from the requestor of the job.
- Jobs can be classified into various categories such as an engineering job, consultation job, etc.
- There will be options to close a finished job or reopen a job after it’s put on hold due to various reasons
- Various reports can be generated from the system to understand the nature of pending jobs and the history of closed jobs.
- Older jobs can be archived for historical purposes.
Fitment of Facilities Job Management to Cloud Delivery Model
- This is typically a standalone , nonstrategic system that can take advantage of the cloud platform without many worries about on-premise data integration
- While facilities may do projects throughout the year, most projects will be funded during the start of the financial year and this application may go through a variable load pattern
- This may have storage and archival needs due to the way photos and some other documents that can be uploaded as part of recording information about the jobs.
Based on some of these points it is ideal that this application can be served as a SaaS/ BpaaS offering and enterprises can take advantage of them.
