The truth is that most everyone is confused about cloud computing, including users and vendors alike! Understanding cloud computing is really quite simple once you know the basics.  More importantly, once you comprehend the basics, you will be able to design and implement a cloud strategy well suited for your business, while addressing efficiency, scalability, reliability and budget.

Tarrytech Computer Consultants are cloud experts, and have implemented a wide array of cloud solutions for our clients.  While working with our clients to design the perfect cloud solution for their business, the first items we review with them are the cloud model options: Public, Private, and Hybrid…

Public Cloud
The public cloud model is the most widely used.  The public cloud usually consists of a group of servers, hosted at a provider, with a shared infrastructure.  The public cloud is suited for non-sensitive information.  It is also well suited to provide you with specific apps such as email and storage.  For example, you may wish to provide your organization with an email solution, without having to purchase and manage a server at your business.  Companies such as Google, Intermedia, and AppRiver have full featured, cost effective solutions that work well for almost all businesses.  Many of these solutions are month-to-month, and require no contract.  Aside from having the advantage of no capital expenditure, these hosted apps provide the user the benefit of integration with all smart phones, essentially no down time, and no need to back up!

Similarly, the public cloud can be leveraged to purchase an entire “server” as well.  These are virtual servers, and are created on shared hardware. Tarrytech has implemented this type of solution for many of our clients.  This type of solution might be selected when you wish to have greater control over your software, or have custom applications.  Although there is a level of complexity involved with leveraging the public cloud for your virtual server, benefits such as power and Internet redundancy, cost savings, scalability, availability, and backup make this the clear solution in many cases.

Private Cloud
The private cloud is similar to purchasing a virtual server in a shared environment.  The difference, however, is that you have hardware dedicated to your company’s solution.  This solution is typically a bit more costly than the public cloud, but provides you with increased security and reliability, and much less hands on management.   This type of solution can be hosted by your company or a provider, and can leverage either virtual or physical servers.

To better illustrate the private cloud, Tarrytech has two examples of the private cloud solutions we have implemented.  One of our clients is a service company who was upgrading their infrastructure.  Tarrytech provided them with a private cloud solution that leveraged virtual servers to provide a significant savings on capital expenditures.  This solution is composed of two physical hosts and a SAN, providing high availability, scalability, and redundancy.  In this case, Tarrytech manages their private cloud on the customer’s premise.  Tarrytech also manages another private cloud for a large child care center.  The child care center purchased a dedicated server and installed it at a collocation facility.  The custom applications on this server are available to two of their locations, via a Citrix solution.

Hybrid
The hybrid cloud is a combination of both Public and Private.  It consists of both shared and dedicated resources.  This type of solution is well suited to organizations that have a wide range of requirements and applications, as well as some that require higher security.

What can be moved to the cloud?
Essentially any part of your IT environment can be moved to the cloud, including backup and storage, email, applications, CRM, content, servers, security, and anti-spam.  In many instances, the entire user desktop has been migrated to the cloud as well.

What are the benefits?
Many business benefits can be realized by adopting a cloud strategy.  In most cases, there is a significant reduction in the capital expense.  Cloud solutions are highly available, and most have provisions for disaster recovery.  Cloud solutions are scalable, and save you a lot of money by avoiding you the need to upgrade software versions, or replace aging hardware.
