It’s probably no surprise that I have long advocated the position that hybrid cloud would eventually become "the standard" architecture with respect to, well, cloud computing. As the dev/ops crowd at Glue Con was recently reminded by the self-styled "most obnoxious man in cloud", Josh McKenty, you can only add to what exists in the data center. You can’t simply rip and replace, forklifts are not allowed, and allowances must be made for how to integrate with existing systems no matter how onerous that might be. The future is, as he put it, open and closed, traditional and modern, automated and human.

I would add to that, it is both public and private, with respect to cloud. Hybrid cloud models were inevitable for all these reasons and more. Suffice to say that there is unlikely to be a technology that will turn data centers into the green fields every starry-eyed young architect and engineer wishes they could be…

Cloud computing has fundamentally changed the way companies build data centers and deliver software applications. Arista Networks, a leading provider of cloud networking solutions, is tapping into this enthusiasm with an initial public offering scheduled to begin trading Friday.

Cloud-computing centers consist of thousands of servers and storage systems connected by optical-fiber lines, routers and switches that can rapidly distribute software apps and data across the Internet and wireless networks to smartphones, tablets, PCs and other systems.

For years we’ve been told that enterprises wouldn’t put their sensitive data into the public cloud, particularly Amazon Web Services. We’ve been reminded, over and over, that companies value control and security too much to entrust their applications to someone else’s public data center.

Then when it became clear that Amazon’s cloud business was exploding, we were told enterprises were only running dev and test workloads there. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The addition will immediately deliver enterprise-grade data encryption and key management, addressing head on the challenges associated with securing and processing sensitive and legally protected data within the Hadoop ecosystem. Thus fulfilling a requirement in myriad compliance regulations like HIPAA-HITECH, PCI-DSS, FERPA and the EU Data Protection Directive.

While Cloudera customers will continue to have a choice of a broad range of cross-platform data protection methods available from Cloudera partners, Cloudera now offers encryption for all data-at-rest stored inside the Hadoop cluster – using an approach that is transparent to applications using the data, thereby minimizing the costs associated with enabling encryption.

The White House plan to cut carbon dioxide pollution by 30% seeks to meet its goals, in part, through efficiency improvements. This could put further pressure on data centers to improve efficiency, many of which are powering servers that are doing very little work or none at all.

For instance, a recent Uptime Institute survey asked enterprise data professionals: "What percentage of your servers are likely comatose?" About 60% of respondents said the number of comatose servers was under 5%. But nearly 25% put at least 10% of their servers were into that category…

A panel of IT experts and information security practitioners warned that SME’s need more education when it comes to cloud computing and cybersecurity. Commenting on the rising adoption of the cloud among businesses amid growing concerns about data security, Catalin Cosoi, chief security strategist at Bitdefender, said: "Years ago, firms were used to having their own data centres and keeping control of information. With cloud computing, businesses are uncertain about who has ultimate control of the management of this data and how secure this information is. With more education, however, SMEs will see that this problem is quite easy to solve."

Désiré Athow, industry journalist, outlined some of the key challenges that organisations face in terms of cloud migration. "To put it bluntly, an SME has other things to take care of other than just learning theories behind cloud computing," he explained. "They don’t necessarily understand how much of a transition it may be from their current system to a cloud-based one…
