Organizations are increasingly moving toward hybrid cloud integration models, according to a recent survey from Technology Business Research (TBR). As a result, the hybrid cloud represents a potential $7 billion hybrid integration market this year, as IT environments are expected to move toward becoming fully hybridized, the findings state.

However, the market is still far from mature, with only a minority of large enterprises currently investing in the integration required to create hybrid clouds. Clearly, the trend creates opportunities for IT professionals who can help organizations move forward with hybrid cloud strategies. "A hybrid IT environment is the end-game for cloud, with the hybrid cloud as a first step," stated one of the reports in the series, "Hybrid Cloud Customer Research."…

Last year Amazon’s cloud computing business, Amazon Web Services (AWS), brought the company $3.8 billion in revenue. As LinkedIn CEO Reid Hoffman, along with entrepreneurs Ben Casnocha and Chris Yeh, illustrate in their new book "The Alliance," this multibillion-dollar business wasn’t the brainchild of CEO Jeff Bezos or even an executive.

It came from Benjamin Black, an employee who had been with the company a little over a year. It was 2003, and Black was recently promoted to website engineering manager. As Black explains in a blog post, he wrote a short paper that outlined a way to restructure Amazon’s infrastructure, and at the end "mentioned the possibility of selling virtual servers as a service."…

Following through on promises from new CEO Satya Nadella, Microsoft continues to add support for non-Microsoft technologies, allowing them to run well on the company’s Azure cloud hosting platform. "There are a wide variety of platforms and technologies that developers and IT managers like to use.

We’re just trying to assure that regardless of your choice, it will work well on Azure " said Doug Mahugh, a technology evangelist for Microsoft Open Technologies, a subsidiary that develops software and tools for non-Microsoft platforms. "Our decisions about where to invest are very much driven by what is popular with developers," he said…

Businesses in the United States currently spend more than $13 billion on cloud computing and managed hosting services, and Gartner projects that by 2015, end-user spending on cloud services could be more than $180 billion worldwide. It is estimated that 50 percent of organizations will require employees to use their own devices by 2017, which will depend on shared cloud storage. All of this requires encryption.

Taking a page from the book of supercomputing, IBM will today announce the addition of a super-fast networking technology called InfiniBand to its SoftLayer cloud computing service. As an industrial strength connection technology intended to create a super-fast connection between computers running in a data center, InfiniBand has the ability to move at speeds as fast as 56 gigabits per second.

That’s fast enough to transfer the contents of a library of 30,000 Blu-ray discs in 24 hours. The technology is widely used in high-performance computing environments and has been used in 222 of the systems on the latest Top 500 list of the world’s most powerful supercomputers…

Although it’s a European Union change, the service level agreement (SLA) standardization issued last month by the European Commission’s Cloud Select Industry Group – Subgroup on Service Level Agreement (C-SIG-SLA … ’cause that’s a catchy name) could become a global standard. Even if it doesn’t, American cloud providers (among others) will very soon feel its effects, according to an article written by Kenneth N. Rashbaum Esq. and Jason M. Tenenbaum of Barton LLP.

The two lawyers indicated in their article that with the Edward Snowden disclosures of last year, there has been an increasing focus around the world on government and technology company transparency. Those pushing ahead the quickest are in Europe, as the Union has been amongst the strongest advocates for change. And the new SLA standardization for cloud services providers it released on June 6 are its first big step in creating that transparency…
