About 10 years ago, Aaron Levie dropped out of college to start a Silicon Valley company called Box. Before long, he was one of those young technology wizards of whom great things were expected. Mr. Levie faced hurdles and some fitful progress but ultimately reached the point many entrepreneurs only dream of: Box conducted an initial public offering in January, but had already raised more than $500 million privately.

It employs 1,200 people and is considered on the cutting edge of a new generation of companies that provide services to big business customers over cloud-computing systems. Now comes the hard part — survival. Box today is worth $2.1 billion, but losses are continuing to add up while revenue is not growing enough to suit Wall Street’s tastes…

A group of Columbia University security researchers have uncovered a new and insidious way for a hacker to spy on a computer, Web app or virtual machine running in the cloud without being detected. Any computer running a late-model Intel microprocessor and a Web browser using HTML5 (i.e., 80% of all PCs in the world) is vulnerable to this attack.

The exploit, which the researchers are calling “the spy in the sandbox,” requires little in the way of cost or time on the part of the attacker; there’s nothing to install and no need to break into hardened systems. All a hacker has to do is lure a victim to an untrusted web page with content controlled by the attacker…

Optus Business customers will have access to Microsoft Azure-enabled cloud services, with the Australian telco becoming a partner of Microsoft’s Cloud OS Network. The Singtel subsidiary claimed on Monday that the partnership would see it become the first Australian network service provider to partner locally with Microsoft for its Cloud OS Network, which claims Rackspace and Cisco among its global partners.

The software giant announced its Cloud OS Network in late 2013, when it formalised an initial 25 partnerships with cloud service providers globally, including Aruba, Fujitsu, Lenovo, and Optus Singapore-based parent company Singtel. "Through this partnership with Microsoft, Optus can now deliver solutions based on the Microsoft Cloud Platform designed to meet enterprise customers’ hybrid computing needs," said Microsoft Australia managing director Pip Marlow…

Raytheon Co. is betting it can leverage the cybersecurity skills it honed for the U.S. military and intelligence agencies to sell to banks and retailers, investing almost $1.7 billion to establish a stand-alone business in an area where its defense peers have struggled to make money.

The company on Monday said it would buy control of Websense Inc. from private-equity firm Vista Partners LLC. Raytheon said Austin, Texas-based Websense, which has 21,000 data-security clients, half of them overseas, will form the core of a new cyber joint venture with forecast sales of $500 million this year and margins of around 20%…

Google will start charging for data transfers between regions and continents from July this year, bucking a recent trend that has seen cloud storage providers slash their pricing. Starting July 15, data transferred between buckets (the basic containers that hold all customer data) located on the same continent but in different regions will cost US$0.01 per gigabyte.

Buckets located in different continents will also be subject to data egress rates from July. Customers in Australian Google Cloud Storage regions will pay substantially higher egress rates compared to their American, Asian and European counterparts: a monthly volume of up to one terabyte costs US$0.19/GB (A$0.24) in Australia, but only US$0.12/GB elsewhere…

Moving business systems to the Cloud offers a lot of positives for most businesses. However, there are risks that need to be clearly understood so you don’t accidentally make your IT infrastructure more complicated to secure.As more businesses fall under some form of regulation, federal, state or local, you have to be aware of compliance requirements.

You also have to be prepared for audits, especially the unexpected kind. What I’m talking about here are not financial audits, but regulatory audits where officials come to your business and review your security policies and practices, specifically as they relate to how your team accesses your various systems and your ability to continue operations should those systems become unavailable. In the current climate, this is mostly focused on business with some form of consumer business as opposed to businesses that solely do business with other businesses, but expect that to change…

NTT Communications Company, the ICT solutions and international business within NTT is building its largest datacenter in Mumbai.  NTT is building 3 lakh square feet datacentre in Chandivali, Mumbai which is planned to be operational by 3rd quarter of CY 2015.

To some, the phrase “legal challenges” means lawsuits.   For a few Indianapolis tech startups, it has an entirely different meaning: attorney pain points and business opportunities.  At least three emerging tech firms are targeting the legal space with subscription-based software, confident they can bring efficiencies to an industry heavy with clients, data and documents.



The three companies are Pact Safe Inc., Express Software & Services LLC and IP Software. Their plays underscore an increasingly diverse startup cohort in a city traditionally known for marketing technology upstarts…

The same week that Alex Haro and Chris Hulls raised $50 million for their mobile app, Life360, the business partners got a letter. It said they had three days to pay licensing fees to a company they had never heard of because their app violated its patented technology.

Haro and Hulls traced the company, Advanced Ground Information Systems, to a coastal home in Jupiter, Florida, with a phone number that initially went to an anonymous voicemail. They couldn’t find any employees on LinkedIn. To Haro, it was “a punch in the gut,” he said…
