The first time I heard the acronym SDN was more than 10 years ago. At that time SDN was the cool way of saying “once the networking guys have racked, stacked and wired the switching and routing components we can install tools on a server and configure them through those tools from the comfort of the NOC”.

This was much more than just standard monitoring and management; we could setup whole networks and change them around, in software. But alas, this wasn’t really what we were hoping for and we would have to wait a number of years for the next advance…

Taiwan-based InnoDisk, which develops and manufactures industrial-class storage products, has disclosed the company is partnering with NAND flash chip vendor Toshiba and Super Micro Computer (Supermicro), a specialist in application-optimized servers, workstations, blades, storage and GPU systems, to provide SSD solutions for data centers and cloud computing.

A joint venture between the companies, named AccelStor, has been formed to provide SSD solutions targeted at customers in the financial sector and telecom carriers, according to InnoDisk…

 In a move that took place in the latter part of 2014 and has not been highly publicized (it is only just being reported in fact), search giant Google acquired mobile cloud computing company Agawi. Led by founders Rajat Gupta, Rohan Relan, and Peter Relan, Agawi has headquarters in Campbell, California, USA. The company bills itself as a technology platform company which specializes in low-latency cloud-to-mobile device app streaming. Alongside mobile it is involved in cloud data services and cloud gaming.

If you’re already dialed in to the Google/Android ecosystem, it’s practically automatic and comes with a learning curve equivalent to taking baby steps.  Asides, you can also get a lot of software that you might need, for example picture editing apps. Agawi itself is no longer a live business: its web site is dead (kind of ironically), and its various Twitter accounts have not been updated since 2013. Just in case you’re in need of a little additional inspiration, however, there’s word out of Microsoft that cloud computing is being used with cutting-edge molecular biology and drones in a system designed to detect infectious disease outbreaks before they become widespread.

The system is being developed through the combined efforts of Microsoft and academic partners across multiple disciplines, all of whom are working together on a project that’s being referred to as Project Premonition. The recent evidence provided in the study on the "Uptake of Cloud in Europe" confirms the increasing adoption of cloud services in the EU by industry according to the size of their business and country of origin.  Furthermore, the research indicates that from 2015 to 2020 cloud computing can create 1 million new jobs in Europe.
