Dell recently announced a number of things it is relating to enterprise VDI and Azure-based cloud computing. The announcement included the release of Wyse 7000 and 5000 series Windows 10-based thin clients, Wyse vWorkspace 8.6 and the Dell Unified Communications Command Suite (UCCS). Let’s examine these one by one:

Wyse Windows 10-Based Thin Clients

Dell announced the Wyse 7490-Z90Q10 and 5490-D90Q10 thin clients. The devices will be available with the specialized "Windows 10 IoT Enterprise" operating system, starting July 29. The company says these thin client devices are "secure, highly scalable and provide a superb user experience." The devices are based on AMD G-Series quad-core microprocessors…

Altair has formed a business collaboration with Microsoft to build and offer high-performance computing (HPC) solutions on the Azure cloud computing platform. This follows Microsoft’s decision to name Altair’s PBS Works suite as its preferred workload management solution for Azure manufacturing clients.

Altair says it will work closely with Microsoft to develop turnkey solutions allowing users to access cloud high-performance computing (HPC) resources in Azure from any web-enabled device. These solutions will leverage Altair’s PBS Works platform in Azure to enable intuitive web portal access and secure workload management for rapid, scalable access to Azure HPC resources…

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. unveiled plans Wednesday to protect user data on its cloud computing platforms globally, highlighting the e-commerce giant’s ambitions to expand its services in markets like the U.S. where it has plans to build a second data center. The Chinese e-commerce giant’s cloud computing unit, known as Aliyun, issued a “Data Protection Pact” promising that customers of its cloud computing platform would have “absolute ownership” over all of their data and the rights to access, share, exchange, transfer or delete their data at any time.

The pact promises customers ranging from developers to government agencies and consumers that their data cannot be altered or transferred by Aliyun in any way. It states that Aliyun is responsible for establishing management and internal audit systems for improving capabilities to protect against threats and the recovery of data in disasters…

Today Univa joins Google, IBM, and other world-class companies founding members of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). The new CNCF organization will accelerate the development of cloud native applications and services by advancing a technology stack for data center containerization and microservices.

"Univa is excited to participate as a founding member of the CNCF,” said Gary Tyreman, CEO of Univa Corporation. “Enterprises want to capture the power and benefits of containerization and we’re proud to be among the industry pioneers who are stepping up to the challenge. Enterprises moving applications to container-based clouds will benefit from an industry-wide, open-source effort to coordinate tech development, according to founding members of the newly created Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). Led by the Linux Foundation, the new group includes such companies as Google, CoreOS, Docker and VMware.

The goal of the new foundation is to "advance the state of the art for building cloud-native applications and services." Cloud native means those applications and services will support containers, dynamic scheduling and micro services. The creation of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation comes at the same time that Google has released a production-ready version of its Kubernetes open-source container orchestration system…

Today, Google announced that it’s turned over one of its key technologies to a new industry consortium — the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, an industry association dedicated to helping developers build web apps the way the big companies do. The Cloud Native Computing Foundation, or CNCF, is housed under the Linux Foundation, with a membership roster that includes companies like Twitter, IBM, Intel, Cisco, and Goldman Sachs, among others.

The basic idea is that, over the years, big companies like Google have gotten really good at "achieving very efficient deployment, development, and scalability" of applications running on the modern web, says Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation. The industry term "cloud native" itself speaks to the mission of the foundation: It’s the current favored buzzword for applications that are designed to run on a cloud computing infrastructure, like Amazon’s giant cloud, or Google’s own…

Dell is hoping its new cloud marketplace offering will ease the transition for solution providers looking to enter the cloud fray. Through a partnership with IT-as-a-service provider CloudRunner—and with support from Microsoft (MSFT)—Dell has created the CloudRunner offering, which provides a platform of services accessible on all types of devices at any time.

Aimed mostly at the SMB space in the healthcare, financial services and legal verticals, CloudRunner aggregates all the necessary business apps along with enterprise-grade security and compliance in one monthly subscription pricing model. “The SMB market changed overnight, empowering SMBs to no longer have to worry about IT,” said Darrin Swan, director of Worldwide Sales and Business Development, Dell Service Provider Program…

IBM continues to take the saying “you have to spend money to make money” close to heart. The tech colossus on Monday reported its thirteenth straight decline in quarterly revenue while executives continued to funnel money into IBM’s “strategic imperatives,” which includes its cloud computing and data analytics business.

For the three months ending June 30, IBM IBM -4.01% logged $20.8 billion in revenue, a 13.5% decline from the $24 billion it brought in the same time period a year earlier. The company’s software business was responsible for a big part of the drop. Revenue in that division fell to $5.8 billion from $6.5 billion the previous year…

Like a lot of vendors Informatica created a dedicated business unit with its own selling motion to address cloud computing opportunities. Now that cloud computing is becoming the mainstream vehicle through which IT services are being delivered, Informatica is reunifying the way it brings products and services to market.

Jeff Moses, newly appointed vice president of cloud sales for Informatica, says one of the biggest opportunities that cloud computing creates is the need to not only integrate legacy systems running on premise with the cloud, but also all the applications that run in different cloud services. In an age where most IT organizations are now regularly accessing two or more cloud platforms, Moses said the number of integration opportunities that solution providers are likely to encounter is only going to increase exponentially…
