Azure is Microsoft’s cloud computing platform, a growing collection of integrated services – analytics, computing, database, mobile, networking, storage, and web. In the 12 months since Build 2014, Microsoft has delivered over 500 new Azure services and features, and greatly expanded the footprint and capabilities of what Azure delivers. Here’s a snapshot of Azure Allure, articulated by Microsoft exec Scott Guthrie, Executive Vice President of Cloud and Enterprise, at the Microsoft Build 2015 conference in San Francisco:

• 19 unique Azure regions up and running worldwide, with over 90,000 new Azure customer subscriptions per month
• 1.4 million SQL databases being used by applications hosted inside Asure
• About 160,000 SQL databases created or dropped each day in Azure
• Over 50 trillion objects stored in Azure Storage
• 425 million users in the Azure Active Directory system
• 3 million developers registered with Visual Studio Online services…

The Alibaba Group is to make an additional investment of $1-billion into Aliyun, its cloud computing unit. The capital will be used to expand Aliyun’s international presence and support infrastructures, in addition to R&D in cloud computing, big data, and the building of a business ecosystem. This move has once again confirmed Alibaba’s determination to expand and develop its cloud computing operations globally.

Aliyun’s global operations have just begun. In this year, Aliyun announced plans to set up data centres in Western US and the Middle East and, later on, the Eastern US, Europe, Singapore and Japan. These plans are designed to serve both the internationalisation of Chinese companies on the one hand, and local customers in those markets on the other…

The amount of data processed in the world doubles every three years and a global commitment to open source technology is the way to handle this growth. An open technology approach fosters innovation through massive community involvement and impedes expensive vendor lock-in. This benefits buyers as markets remain more competitive.

In doing so, open standards and technologies also allow for market hypergrowth, and this is the key to handling the growth of data. A doubling every three years means we’ll be grappling with a full Yottabyte of data in the year 2040. That’s one billion petabytes, an amount of data that, similar to pondering geologic time, I can understand in the abstract but not truly grasp…
