Accelerating cloud storage and reducing the effects of latency

Over a number of years there has been a long and hard fought battle to secure the ability to‘accelerate anywhere’any data type to, from and across a cloud area network (ClAN) to allow fast access to applications, or to secure data as a part of a back-up and archiving strategy. According to Claire Buchanan, chief commercial officer at self-configuring infrastructure optimise networks (SCION) vendor Bridgeworks, this battle is still ongoing. With the use of traditional WAN optimisation techniques the long drawn out battle has still to be won.

“It may not long be the case as with the advent of machine intelligence and technologies such as SCION, The problem has been that of small pipes and the inability to accelerate data. Therefore, the use of deduping and compression tools have been the only way to gain a perceived performance improvement”, she explains…

IBM Cloud Opens To Apache Spark

IBM is pushing Apache Spark into the IBM Cloud and expanding its reach into a number of analytic and commerce platforms. "We do talk about Spark as being an operating system," said Beth Smith, IBM’s general manager for analytics platforms. "We see it…as enabling more analytic applications for more users."

IBM will provide Apache Spark as a service on Bluemix, IBM’s cloud platform. IBM will also be pushing Spark into BigInsights on Bluemix, as well as IBM’s Data Science Workbench and its SPSS Analytics Server and Modeler. Nearly Half of Companies Adopting Containers See In-Production Monitoring as Key to Success

Ruxit, a division of Digital Performance software company Dynatrace, today announced findings from a new survey titled: The State of Containers and the Docker Ecosystem 2015. The report identifies key issues facing organizations using containers, including in-production application performance monitoring to achieve even more successful container deployments. The report, conducted by O’Reilly Media in collaboration with Ruxit, provides insights into adoption, use, and challenges of container technologies like Docker. Survey participants represent 138 companies across a wide range of industries, including software, consulting, publishing and media, education, cloud services, hardware, retail, government and others.

Since Docker launched in 2013, more than 800 million containers have been pulled from the public Docker Hub and this technology continues to capture the attention of developers and operators alike. While container use is skyrocketing there are barriers to success that need to be addressed.
