Outspoken CIO Says Cloud Computing Best Option for Digital Health Care

By David

Grazed from eWeek. Author: David Needle.

The need to move to modern computer technology including cloud computing to enable the transition to digital health care and medical records was a hot topic during a session here at the Constellation Research Connection Enterprise conference. While many new technologies offer ways for hospitals and other health care institutions to improve payment systems and streamline patients’ access to their medical records, panelists said the transition is hampered by a reluctance to invest in new systems.

"The challenge is how do we catch up to and leapfrog to where consumers are today, while still trying to fix, for example, payment systems" running on aging mainframe systems, said Anne Kao, chief digital officer and CIO at MedAmerica. But as with enterprises in general, some health care providers are moving more aggressively to new technology…

Building new types of computers, constructing an intelligent cloud and helping companies increase productivity are the three “interlocking ambitions” he wants Microsoft Corp. to pursue “boldly”, CEO Satya Nadella said in a conversation on Thursday. Nadella wants Microsoft to help companies reinvent their productivity and business processes with the help of tools like OneNote, Windows 10 and Office 365.

He wants it to build an intelligent cloud with the help of Azure. And he wants to introduce new types of computers such as the Surface Pro tablet, wearables such as Microsoft Band and mixed reality gadgets such as HoloLens. All three objectives are aimed at changing the face of computing…

Hive-IO today launched its software-defined compute solution available as a complete infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) offering for large enterprise and SMB customers.  This solution – based on the world’s largest virtual infrastructure implementation – is offered at a small fraction of the cost of traditional approaches.

"The public cloud is too open to provide a secure infrastructure and the private cloud is too costly and cumbersome.  We offer a unified architecture on a bare metal install that removes up to 30% of existing hardware requirements and eliminates vendor layer complexity in a cost-effective holistic solution. As enterprises and organizations look forward to cloud-enablement, the lightweight approach offered by Hive-IO provides a clear upgrade to traditional VDI, servers, storage, and platform solutions. The Linux Foundation, the nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the growth of Linux and collaborative development, today is announcing the Open API Initiative. Founding members of the Open API Initiative include 3Scale, Apigee, Capital One, Google, IBM, Intuit, Microsoft, PayPal, Restlet and SmartBear.

The Initiative will extend the Swagger specification and format to create an open technical community within which members can easily contribute to building a vendor neutral, portable and open specification for providing metadata for RESTful APIs. This open specification will allow both humans and computers to discover and understand the capabilities of the respective services with a minimal amount of implementation logic. The Initiative will also promote and facilitate the adoption and use of an open API standard.

“Many cloud service providers have given a nod to compliance through extremely patchy reporting and alerting without really addressing the issue,” said Justin Giardina, chief technology officer, iland. “That is only half the battle. At iland, we recognise that it takes both compliance focused features and reporting in addition to an in-house compliance team to provide our customers with real peace of mind in today’s complicated regulatory environment.”

Cloud key to future cyber security, says Qualys

By David

Grazed from ComputerWeekly. Author: Warwick Ashford.

Netflix, AirBnB and Uber are all pointing the way to the cloud as the future, and that is also true for security, according to Wolfgang Kandek, chief technology officer (CTO) at security firm Qualys. “Most enterprises are facing today’s cyber security challenges with IT architecture that was developed 25 years ago when IT had full control over computing,” he told the RSA Conference 2015 in Abu Dhabi.

However, he said, this has changed completely with the move to employees using their own consumer devices to access enterprise services, systems and data. “This leads to a much bigger attack surface, which we try to address by piling up security technology on security technology. In turn, this has led to a terribly over-loaded enterprise technology stack that is very brittle and bound to fail,” said Kandek…

Does cloud computing mean software providers should be registered tax agents?

By David

Grazed from InTheBlack. Author: Christopher Niesche.

Changes brought about by cloud computing, the oversight of tax financial advisers, and streamlining its services are some of the challenges the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB) is facing over the next 12 months. Just like the broader tax and accounting profession, the TPB is responding to the challenges thrown up by increasing IT capability and cloud storage of information.

Chair of the TPB, Ian Taylor FCPA, says it is providing guidance on these trends. “We’re seeing a very marked change in the way people do business digitally,” he says. “We’re getting an increasingly electronic interchange of information and interaction with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). That means changes for agents, because a number of agents previously used to lodge only by paper.”…

CloudPhysics Releases Exploration Mode Which Lets VMware Users Identify the Root Cause of Infrastructure Issues Within Minutes

By David

CloudPhysics, provider of data-driven insights for smarter IT, today released Exploration Mode, which is available as part of its award-winning analytics solution for VMware users. CloudPhysics’ new Exploration Mode enables admins to identify the root causes of server issues, by easily and interactively displaying resource consumption patterns and environment changes over time.

Infrastructure is increasingly complex, and change is constant — whether immediate, or slower, more insidious configuration drift. A recent CloudPhysics survey indicated that 68% of application disruptions are due to configuration issues, rather than software or hardware failures. Prior to Exploration Mode, when a change-driven problem surfaced in the infrastructure, IT admins were unable to "replay" the environment across time to correlate events or changes that may have caused the problem.
