The Future of Information: Linking Cloud, Cybersecurity and Big Data Investment

By David

Sometimes it seems like every other business is a cloud-based company. This internet-based computing service has entirely transformed the way information is processed, organized, stored and shared. Indeed, it seems almost impossible to separate the explosion of big data from cloud computing.

However, the rapid transition from old school data management to the highly efficient data centers driving today’s markets has created a need for cybersecurity solutions. With sensitive personal information, healthcare records and financial records being managed by these systems, cloud security has emerged as a vital aspect of protecting this data. As a result, cloud computing, cybersecurity and big data investment have formed an important nexus in the tech space…

Cloud Computing: Hackers reveal flaws in cyber security framework

By David

Grazed from TheNation.  Author: Asina Pornwasin.

The recent hacking of government websites has called into question the government’s cyber security standards and risked its reputation for management, but a single gateway was not a solution to that problem, cyber security specialists said yesterday.  What the government can do is upgrade cyber security standards and adopt cyber security best practices as well as draft a national policy framework and regulations for cyber security.

Police websites and about 300 Courts of Justice websites were hacked by sympathisers of the Anonymous group in protest against the Koh Tao double-murder verdict.   That led to a suggestion from police to bring back the single gateway plan to tackle the problem…

The cloud and the Internet of things are inseparable

By David

Grazed from InfoWorld.  Author: David Linthicum.

The annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) last week featured plenty of cloud-related announcements from a wide variety of companies. Indeed, most new devices, from refrigerators to cars, have a massive cloud-based back end. The cloud components of these technologies are becoming more systemic. Indeed, the cloud is assumed.

More and more, people expect everything to be connected. No matter if it’s a washer and dryer, a refrigerator, or a car, they all communicate or will communicate with cloud servers. Why? Companies that make these devices understood early on that it does not make sense to keep all the smarts and storage in the device itself, and these devices must be instantly upgradable for them to have long-term value. Think about your TV service or smartphone updates. That’s how cars and thermostats — and eventually everything else that’s electronic in your home — are beginning to work…

By David

Intel reported fourth quarter earnings after the market closed Thursday, that showed a continuing decline in its PC chip sales and only a slight growth in its data center business. The Santa Clara, Calif.-based chip maker reported that it’s net income in the fourth quarter fell 1 percent to $3.6 billion, or 74 cents earnings per share, compared to $3.7 billion, or 74 cents earnings per share, in the quarter a year earlier. The company posted revenue of $14.9 billion, up 1 percent from the previous year.

PaaS Predictions for 2016

By David
Article written by cloud computing consultant, Barry Gold.

Often dwarfed by IaaS and SaaS services, platform as a service or PaaS is a category that has quietly been growing in scope and demand over the past couple of years. This category of cloud services offers customers a platform to develop and manage their own web applications, without any need to build the supporting infrastructure. So what comes next for PaaS? Here are a few predictions of what could happen over the next year.

Cloud services in 2016

To understand the position of PaaS among cloud computing trends as a whole this year, it helps to look at the bigger picture first. This year, leading cloud experts have made predictions showing that the whole field will grow and change in significant ways. For example, it’s expected that an increasing number of enterprises will jump on the cloud bandwagon as a whole, with many businesses choosing to diversify their cloud strategy rather than rely on a single provider. So while a business may choose one vendor for their storage services, they may choose another for PaaS, which opens up the playing field.

Cloud Computing: AWS offers part-time computing at a discount

By David

Grzed from InfoWorld. Author: Serdar Yegulalp.

In a new twist, Amazon has again repackaged and repriced its services, this time allowing Amazon EC2 instances to be treated as if they were scheduled jobs — at up to 10 percent off Amazon’s usual prices. SRI (Scheduled Reserved Instances) allows customers to "reserve capacity on a recurring basis with a daily, weekly, or monthly schedule over the course of a one-year term," according to the blog post announcing the new feature.

Purchasing an SRI is similar to setting up a conventional reserved instance. After the user selects a time frame for running instances, Amazon provides a list of instance types available for that segment. To that end, using SRIs slightly resembles using EC2 Spot instances. Instead of bidding for capacity, as one would with a Spot Instance, customer bids for one of a limited number of usage slots available in a given window…
