Network Virtualization Is VMware’s Next Frontier

By David

Grazed from Fortune. Author: Barb Darrow.

VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger is banking that network virtualization will be a bigger deal for the company than its bread-and-butter vSphere server virtualization lineup in the not-so-distant future. He’d better hope so. As Gelsinger himself put it Wednesday, vSphere has 80% market share in corporate data centers, so there’s not that much room for growth there.

Network virtualization pools networking hardware—routers and switches—and configures and manages it as needed with software. Basically, the smarts of the system comes from the software, not the individual hardware components. “NSX is the next ESX,” Gelsinger told attendees of the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference in San Francisco on Wednesday…

Zscaler Announces Expansion of PartnerEcosystem to Include Leading Cloud Application Security Brokers (CASB)

By David
Grazed from Zscaler

Zscaler, the leading cloud security company, today announced an expansion of its open partnerecosystem to include Cloud Application Security Brokers (CASB) and is pleased to announce that CipherCloud, CloudLock and Skyhigh Networks are now partners of Zscaler.

The changing IT landscape brought on by the shift of applications from the data center to the cloud and the increased access through mobile devices introduces new threats that go undetected by appliances deployed in the data center. Enterprises have to rethink their traditional appliance-centric castle-and-moat security architectures while continuing to provide their users with access to cloud applications and services. Zscaler’s cloud security platform provides full inline threat protection to guard against cyber attacks, prevent data leakage and allow safe enablement of cloud applications by employees.

Lightstream Expands its Storage Solutions Portfolio with Zadara Enterprise Storage-as-a-Service

By David

Zadara Storage, the provider of enterprise-class storage-as-a-service (STaaS), and Lightstream today announced that Zadara’s award-winning Virtual Private Storage Array (VPSA) platform is now available as part of a new Lightstream storage-as-a-service offering.

Industry research has shown that the storage-as-a-service market will grow from about 10% of the overall storage market in 2015, to as much as 80% or more by 2023 (source: IT Brand Pulse, October 2015). IT professionals are recognizing that the traditional Capital Expense (CapEx) model of capacity acquisition and management cannot keep up with the data storage needs of today’s enterprise. Instead, IT organizations are being asked to reduce costs while at the same time provide immediately available, agile, and reliable enterprise-grade storage. The historical model of evaluating potential vendors, buying, installing and maintaining disk arrays and then repeating the cycle every 3-5 years cannot support this goal.

New Transceiver Speeds Data Transfers for Cloud Computing

By David

Grazed from ElectronicDesign. Author: James Morra.

Over the last year, computer companies have been diving deeper into cloud computing, with Hewlett Packard making the controversial decision to spin out its information technology business, and Dell buying data storage company EMC. The widespread use of cloud computing is not only making for more competition, but also leading to new advances in servers that process data from the cloud.

Now, researchers have built a transceiver that could speed up data transfers between optical modules and semiconductor chips used in servers and switches. Built by Fujitsu Laboratories and system-on-chip designer Socionext, the transceiver can transmit data at 56 Gbits/s per channel—twice the speed of current transceiver standards…

Cutting the cord: Why the cloud is the future of app delivery

By David

Grazed from CloudTech. Author: Jimmy Chang.

IT is challenged by the line of business to deliver a competitive edge to compete in a global market. Securely delivering apps and data to any device is a core IT workflow to enable productivity. However, if you are like most companies, your IT budget is not growing at the same pace as demand for IT services. To be more agile, the current paradigm around app delivery needs to be turned upside down. IT needs to cut the cord.

IT’s evolution: From plow horse to racehorse

IT and the work world have come a long way. Remember the days when the IT department issued you a standard black PC and employees worked at desks? Back then, IT was focused on analysing available IT solutions and then executing multiyear plans. It was common for IT to be working on multi-year programs for SharePoint, ERP, and CRM systems…

Docker Puts Emphasis on Container Security with Docker 1.10

By David
Article Written by David Marshall

containers

Docker has launched the latest version of its containerization platform, and with it, placed a heavy emphasis on security updates.  The latest release of Docker Engine has now reached version 1.10 (that’s one incremental number above 1.09, so as not to be confused with a 1.1 release).

The new additions help answer one of the main objections raised by some of the early critics of the technology — solving security challenges.

Up until this release, Docker containers have had to run as root under the Docker daemon, bringing with it a host of security concerns.  The security solution in Docker 1.10 is a new feature called "user namespaces," a concept that was originally introduced as an experimental feature in Docker version 1.9.  User namespaces expands on the idea of granular access policies by allowing multiple namespaces to reside on the same Docker host.

Unitrends, a leader in enterprise-level cloud continuity, and CloudCheckr, a key provider of Amazon Web Services (AWS) monitoring and services management solutions, today announced a joint partnership to help managed service providers (MSPs) build, manage and grow their AWS-hosted businesses.

In a recent survey conducted by Kaseya, more than 400 MSPs revealed that the greatest areas of MSP services revenue growth in 2015 were backup and recovery, remote monitoring, and cloud services, including Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Software as a Service (SaaS). Respondents expect these service pricing plans to rise again substantially in 2016. Leveraging the powerful combination of CloudCheckr and Unitrends Boomerang, a virtual appliance enabling users to simply and affordably move virtual machines (VMs) from VMware to AWS, MSPs can take full advantage of these offerings without increasing overhead expenses.
