How to choose the best cloud for your app

By David

Grazed from InfoWorld.  Author: Pete Johnson.

How should I match the applications in my portfolio with the most appropriate cloud? This question is becoming increasingly common in enterprise IT organizations today, and it can be difficult to answer. Often the decision depends on the sensitivity of the data within the application. At other times, public versus private cloud considerations are paramount. Other factors influencing the decision include business goals and whether or not speed or price must be optimized.

Of course, performance and cost are difficult to measure, and comparing across clouds is hardly straightforward. This article illustrates a methodology and test that CliQr uses to help customers weigh these considerations and make a decision on which of the most popular clouds — Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform — and instances will be best for a set of sample applications…

Cloud Computing: In the WAN, it’s better to be single than attached

By David

Grazed from NetworkWorld.  Author: Khalid Raza.

In a traditional WAN infrastructure, the control plane and data plane are tightly coupled, typically congruent, and cannot be separated due to how they are integrated with each network device. This architecture served the networking needs of enterprises well until now, since most data flows were structured around data centers with centralized exits.

However, the emergence of cloud computing and new dynamic business requirements that involve communicating with multiple partners and suppliers have forced enterprises to embrace new connectivity models. Today, enterprises need secure access to both partners and cloud provider infrastructures. This new model requires a different policy structure that is very difficult to instantiate and maintain within a legacy MPLS WAN…

Navy set to launch its first ‘cloud store’

By David

Grazed from FederalNewsRadio.  Author: Jared Serbu.

While the Defense Department has made some strides over the past year in simplifying the way it buys cloud computing services, individual DoD components are still, to a large extent, on their own when it comes to picking a provider and shepherding them through the military’s security approval process. The Navy hopes to change that beginning next month with a managed service it’s calling its “Cloud Store.”

Version 1.0 of the store will have a decidedly limited selection: its catalog will include just one provider, Amazon Web Services, leaning on an existing contract the Navy’s Space and Naval Warfare System Command already holds with AWS…
