Controlling Hybrid Cloud Complexity with Containers: CoreOS, rkt, and Image Standards

By David

Grazed from InfoQ.  Author: Josh Wood.

While the public cloud draws headlines, deployments on public Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) or Platform as a Service (PaaS) offerings may not satisfy the regulatory, security, or performance demands of every workload. The economics of cloud metering do not fit every scenario, and a loosely-accounted and somewhat mysteriously large AWS bill has become increasingly common on CTO desks.

An emerging hybrid pattern sees deployments divided between sensitive or otherwise prioritized on-premises jobs, and commodity tasks running on public cloud infrastructure, in an attempt to best exploit the strengths of each environment…

IBM launches new cloud services for blockchain

By David

Grazed from Reuters.  Author: Editorial Staff.

IBM on Friday announced new services to help companies design and develop blockchain technology in a secure environment in the cloud, a network of computers where users are increasingly storing their data and computing work.  The blockchain, the underlying technology behind bitcoin, is a digital tool for doing a slew of functions such as recording and verifying transactions. The technology, according to its many supporters, would make it easier to create cost-efficient business networks without requiring central control.

The interest in the blockchain surged last year when Wall Street’s major players such as Goldman Sachs delved into the technology and saw it as a way to solve inefficiencies in financial markets.  "Clients tell us that one of the inhibitors of the adoption of blockchain is concerns about security," said Jerry Cuomo, vice president, Blockchain at IBM in a statement…

Uber is just the tip of the iceberg: The gig economy is leveraging the human cloud

By David

We’ve all heard of Uber and Airbnb, but those companies are just a fraction of the new gig economy, which is made up of part-time workers and freelancers.  A study by the JPMorgan Chase Institute reveals that the number of current gig workers has grown 10 times since 2012 and that 4% of adults in the U.S. have at one time worked in such a capacity.

Talent on tap

According to Mike Wachholz, president of Pontoon Solutions, there is a dramatic transformation underway in how we think about work. “What we’re seeing is the unprecedented rapid change in speed, complexity, and transparency in the job market … Both companies and job seekers are seeking ultimate flexibility in their engagement model with each other,” says Wachholz…

With Microsoft’s trusted Cloud, startups and ISVs are building a safer, secure digital world

By David

Grazed from YourStory.  Author: Editorial Staff.

According to the 2015 breach report from Gemalto 707.5 million data records were compromised. This data when broken down, translates into 1.9 million records getting compromised every day, 80,766 records compromised every hour, 1,346 records compromised every minute and 22 records compromised every second!

Today, as companies and devices continue to collect ever-increasing amounts of customer information, and as consumers’ online digital activities become more diverse and prolific, more and more data is at risk and trust is defining how and who the companies do business with.  Another report by McKinsey & Company on enterprise IT security implications released in January 2014 states that lack of cyber-resilience could cost the global economy as much as $3 trillion by 2020 by slowing down the pace of technology and innovation….

Cloud Solution Provider Paradox: Promise and Problems

By David

Grazed from ChannelInsider.  Author: Michael Vizard.

The cloud solution provider faces a complicated paradox: There is no shortage of opportunities—or obstacles—in this burgeoning field. This irony, though common in the business world, is particularly pronounced in the channel.  The movement of workloads in the cloud challenges business models that many solution providers have relied on for decades.  A key issue for companies in the channel, including cloud MSPs, is finding the spots where they can add value.

However, as cloud computing continues to mature, those spots are becoming more apparent. Although spending for "the greater cloud"—including software as a service (SaaS), platform as a service (PaaS) and MSP cloud solutions—is projected to exceed $500 billion by 2020, IDC reports that more than half of cloud service revenue is now generated indirectly via one channel or another…

The Cloud Is Tearing Up Tech and Helping Amazon

By David

Grazed from Barrons.  Author: Tiernan Ray.

What ails tech? The last couple of weeks of corporate earnings have seen one disappointment after another, for companies large and small.  Some of this is pressure on global economies finally hitting home, with the miracle of American tech giants making money off an expanding world marketplace now showing its unfortunate downside. But that’s not all. Read through the statements of the companies reporting, and there is evidence that their businesses are changing drastically because of cloud computing.

Cloud is displacing sales of traditional equipment and software. In a time of pressure on global economies, the move to cloud computing will only accelerate, given that it offers companies a chance to rent computing rather than buy it, thereby trimming their up-front capital budgets. That leaves some companies caught between a cloud and a hard place…
