Oracle Corp. said it agreed to acquire utilities cloud-services provider Opower Inc., expanding the database giant’s portfolio of cloud software for the utilities industry. Oracle will pay $10.30 a share in cash, a roughly 30% premium over Friday’s closing price. The deal is valued at about $532 million, net of Opower’s cash.

Opower’s stock rose 31% to $10.31 in premarket trading as Oracle remained unchanged from Friday’s closing price of $39.86. Rodger Smith, general manager of Oracle’s utilities global business unit, said the tie-up would make Oracle the largest provider of cloud services to utilities…

Intel is going through a rough phase. Some weeks back it had lowered its revenue forecast for the year and decided to cut down about 11.5 percent of its workforce in order to realign the business. In the latest news from the world’s largest chipmaker, there are plans to keep the smartphone SoC divisions on hold for now – effectively putting Intel out of the race among the smartphone chipmakers.

In a report published by analyst Patrick Moorhead, Intel will most likely be cancelling its forthcoming Broxton and SoFIA products, thereby leaving the smartphones and tablets market for the time being. In its response to a report on AnandTech, Intel has stated that it is accelerating its transformation from a PC company to one that will be known for cloud computing as well as smart, connected devices…

Tech giants from home and abroad are battling to garner a larger slice of the Korean market for cloud computing solutions, industry watchers said Monday, as local demand for the services is expected to grow sharply down the road. The Korean market for cloud computing solutions is expected to reach $1.2 billion in 2019, up from the $540 million posted in 2014, according to the data compiled by industry tracker Gartner.

Cloud computing solutions allow users to access their photos, documents and other content saved on servers through smartphones and PCs. The service has been gaining popularity around the globe, especially at the office, as it cuts down on costs. In January, U.S. tech giant Oracle held a large-scale cloud computing conference in Seoul to tap into the fast-growing Korean market. Oracle currently has around 70 million users through its clients in its cloud computing segment around the globe…

The economics of cloud metering do not fit every scenario, and a loosely-accounted and somewhat mysteriously large AWS bill has become increasingly common on CTO desks.

An emerging hybrid pattern sees deployments divided between sensitive or otherwise prioritized on-premises jobs, and commodity tasks running on public cloud infrastructure, in an attempt to best exploit the strengths of each environment…

IBM on Friday announced new services to help companies design and develop blockchain technology in a secure environment in the cloud, a network of computers where users are increasingly storing their data and computing work.  The blockchain, the underlying technology behind bitcoin, is a digital tool for doing a slew of functions such as recording and verifying transactions. The technology, according to its many supporters, would make it easier to create cost-efficient business networks without requiring central control.

According to the 2015 breach report from Gemalto 707.5 million data records were compromised. This data when broken down, translates into 1.9 million records getting compromised every day, 80,766 records compromised every hour, 1,346 records compromised every minute and 22 records compromised every second!

Today, as companies and devices continue to collect ever-increasing amounts of customer information, and as consumers’ online digital activities become more diverse and prolific, more and more data is at risk and trust is defining how and who the companies do business with.  Another report by McKinsey & Company on enterprise IT security implications released in January 2014 states that lack of cyber-resilience could cost the global economy as much as $3 trillion by 2020 by slowing down the pace of technology and innovation….
