How to get started with cloud computing
1. Get smart
Before making a move into the cloud, get educated on the principles and definitions of cloud computing, advises Johan Goossens, head of NATO’s Allied Command Transformation’s (ACT) Technology & Human Factors Branch in Norfolk, Va.
"We started in the summer of 2010 with educational efforts. We got ourselves smart on the terminology, sitting down with vendor partners," he says.

Cloud computing infrastructure services ‘becoming established’
A growing number of companies are set to make use of cloud computing infrastructure services in the next few years.
This is the opinion of a new report from IT analyst Gartner, which forecast the global enterprise software market will record revenue growth of 7.5 per cent in 2011 compared to last year.
Tom Eid, research vice president at Gartner, said: "The focus in the enterprise software industry is on upgrading of build-run-manage technologies to improve agility, establishing cloud computing infrastructure services and results-reporting transparency."
Master data management projects ‘require a holistic approach’
Companies that are planning to implement master data management procedures should plan carefully for how they want the work to proceed.
This is the opinion of Gartner research vice president John Radcliffe, who explained that it is necessary to have a strong data governance framework in place before such initiatives get underway, reports Information Age.
"Unless organisations take a holistic, business-driven approach to master data management, addressing governance and metrics requirements in particular, they risk having their master data management programmes fail," he said.
Nothing to Fear in the Cloud Except Organizational Issues
When it comes to cloud computing, there are a myriad of technical issues that need to be worked out. But before most companies can take full advantage of cloud computing, many IT organizations are struggling through organizational issues that currently hamper their ability to adopt cloud computing.

WAN Optimization for a Better Cloud
It’s been said that the cloud turns the public communications infrastructure into a giant enterprise backplane. No wonder, then, that so much effort is focused on shoring up wide area throughput.
WAN optimization has been with us for some time, having already proven its worth in lowering costs and increasing connectivity between central offices, remote branches and even clients/partners. But there’s a new sense of urgency these days as more and more enterprises come to realize how vital the WAN is to burgeoning cloud infrastructures.
Permanent General Moves E-Mail Archiving to the Cloud
During a routine business continuity review in mid-2008, Permanent General Assurance Corp. determined that its e-mail safeguards were insufficient. "Our disaster recovery strategy for 600 e-mail users was performing time-consuming daily and weekly tape backups," recalls Ernie Clapp, Permanent General’s manager of network services. "We needed to modernize our strategy as well as update our archiving policies to address the new e-discovery landscape."
