Oracle kicks off global cloud computing road show
Oracle is conducting a cloud computing road show that will hit roughly 80 cities around the world, according to its website.
Attendees will hear from experts who "will share real-world best practices, reference architectures, detailed customer case studies, and more," according to a statement. "You’ll learn how to transform IT into a superior service provider with a strategy and roadmap for building, deploying, and managing an enterprise cloud."
All Services Under One Cloud
Now that the cloud is upon us, it’s time to address some of the more pertinent questions surrounding this new environment, namely, what do you want to do with it?
For many enterprises, the answer so far has been somewhat limited. Some have opened up new storage resources, others are running some productivity applications and performing other basic functions. But the real action won’t happen unless and until we see wholesale infrastructure ported over to the cloud. Only then do we open up the possibility for things like massive scalability and regional, or even global, load balancing.
Primary storage systems ‘to be subject to deduplication solutions’
Deduplication solutions are to be used in greater numbers on primary storage systems as the year progresses.
Dave Raffo, senior news director of the Search Storage website, explained that businesses are looking for new ways to tackle the problem of data storage growth, with this option being one potential solution for companies to consider.
He noted that there has already been a move in this direction following promotional work for providers of the technology.

The Bronze plan, aimed at individual users, gives customers a guarantee of response to filed queries — known as trouble tickets — regarding AWS APIs and AWS infrastructure within 12 business hours for normal queries and one day for low-priority tickets. Pricing is $49 (£31) per month.
Salesforce.com applications ‘growing in popularity’
A rising number of companies are making use of Salesforce.com applications for their operations.
This is the suggestion of James Urquhart, a market strategist for cloud computing at Cisco Systems, who told the CNET website that the last couple of years have been highly successful ones for the company.
"Salesforce.com has moved from simply being a customer relationship management software-as-a-service vendor to being a true cloud platform contender," he said.
Google scores legal win over Microsoft cloud contract
A judge has sided with Google and issued a preliminary injunction ordering the US Department of the Interior to abandon procurement efforts for a Microsoft-only cloud computing contract.
Judge Susan Braden of the US Court of Federal Claims wrote, in an order made public late Tuesday, that a July determination by an assistant secretary naming Microsoft’s Business Productivity Online Suite-Federal (BPOS) as the agency’s standard for messaging and collaboration did not include "proper justification or appropriate approvals."
Europol to reveal cybercrime risk level
European law enforcement agency Europol on Friday will present its assessment of the threat posed by cybercrime, along with its strategy to tackle it.
"Cybercrime is borderless by nature, this makes criminal investigations more complicated for law enforcement authorities," said Europol Director Rob Wainwright. "To effectively tackle cybercrime, adequate cross-border provisions are needed."
