Gmail Makes You 80 Times Greener, Says Google

In its ongoing quest to convince businesses and individuals to abandon the archaic practice of operating their own servers and shift their IT operations to the cloud, Google has frequently asserted that cloud computing is more cost efficient than servers run on-premises.

Now Google can argue that the cloud is more energy efficient, too. Citing its own research, supported by related findings from the Carbon Disclosure Project and from a consulting professor at Stanford, the company says that Gmail is almost 80 times more energy efficient than in-house email…

HP Launches Cloud Service Beta

Carving out a space in the growing market for cloud computing, Hewlett-Packard has launched a beta IaaS (Infrastructure-as-a-Service) offering, called HP Cloud Services, the company announced Wednesday.

The initial offerings, called HP Cloud Compute and HP Cloud Object Storage, will provide compute and storage resources from HP’s own data centers. HP will use the OpenStack set of open-source cloud software tools to provide the foundation for these services. HP joined the OpenStack project in July…
