Cloud Security: Look to the Mainframe

By David
Grazed from NextGov.  Author: Jessica Herrera-Flanigan.

With all the talk about cloud computing, a number of questions have arisen about how secure the cloud really is. Personally, I’m not that concerned. If implemented properly, cloud security may actually be better for cybersecurity if but for one reason: we’ve been down this road before.

While some may argue with the specifics, cloud computing is a modern version of the mainframe services that businesses flocked away from a decade or two ago. Now, in a reversal, many are moving to the "cloud," i.e. moving control of their computing efforts from an internal local function to a centralized computing location.

So as companies and the government ponder security in the cloud, it would be worthwhile to look back before recreating a new security regime. Mainframes, in many ways, were inherently secure. There was centralized control and the main challenges were managing user accounts and access control. These are easy challenges, especially in an distributed network environment when a mainframe has to assess whether users are who they say they are — identification and authentication tools are critical…

By David
Grazed from International Business Times.  Author:  Stefan Töpfer.

Cloud Computing is on everybody’s lips these days and we are bombarded with geek arguments telling us why we should use this technology to run our businesses. Many of us wonder what it’s all about, this cloud computing?

The answers are often not compelling. Why do I need 600 trillion megabyte storage and what is it anyway? My answer to these numbers — who cares?

Here are a few reasons to think about business cloud computing:

Start Your Business in 60 Seconds. That is how long it takes to sign up to business cloud computing providers. Another 10 minutes later and you’ll be sending out bills or quotes using your own domain name…

By David
Grazed from GMA.  Author:  Editorial Staff.

Hewlett-Packard (HP) is aiming to challenge Amazon’s dominance in the cloud service sector, as it launched Tuesday its own cloud service that can take advantage of its data centers.  Tech site BetaNews.com said the service, dubbed Converged Cloud, is similar to Amazon’s Web Services, which it said is so far the largest provider of public cloud access.

"HP will offer on-demand instances and virtual machines, and users will pay for the resources they use starting May 10," it said.  But it said whether this public cloud computing push will change the game remains to be seen.

Amazon is considered to hold a commanding lead in the space, and other Silicon Valley companies are making plays for what’s left, BetaNews.com said.  Presently, HP already provides private cloud services as well as running data centers for select partners, BetaNews.com said…

Four Barriers to Cloud Due Diligence

By David
Grazed from CFO.  Author: Rob Livingstone.

As a CFO overseeing your organization’s transition to cloud, how can you ensure your journey delivers on its promises over both the medium and long term? Focusing on the short term is the comparatively easy part. Entry costs are – as cloud vendors are quick to tell you – low relative to on-premise.  But enterprise risk management is often one of the CFO’s key responsibilities and an uncontrolled shift to the cloud could expose you and your organization to unacceptable long and medium-term risks.

On the other hand, you could take your chances and hope to get lucky.

But seriously . . .

NASA is building an entirely new Web architecture that leans heavily on cloud computing, open source tools, and social media. It will be used both for public-facing websites and internal Web services, the space agency announced Tuesday.

The new Web architecture is part of version 2.0 of NASA’s Open Government Plan. All the major federal agencies released updates on their open government efforts this week as part of the Obama administration’s larger Open Government Initiative, which was jumpstarted by a memo from President Obama in January 2009, soon after he took office…

By David
Grazed from CIO.  Author:  Meridith Levinson.

When Majestic Realty Co., a Los Angeles-based commercial real estate developer, moved to Microsoft’s Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS) for cloud-based email in early 2011, CIO Jon Grunzweig was shocked by the lack of technical support he found for BPOS in the marketplace.

"A year ago, no one knew anything about BPOS," he says. "We couldn’t get good advice ahead of time on what to look out for, what to think about. That knowledge wasn’t there. Microsoft didn’t have it. Neither did third-parties."…
