At the April 12, 2012 TiE Cloud meeting in Santa Clara, CA, three leading Cloud Service Providers presented their views as to where the cloud industry is now and where it’s going.  Microsoft, HP and Salesforce are each addressing a different segment of the cloud market with what they believe are compelling value propositions for their customers.

Some of the issues they addressed included: changing business models, cloud advantages, cloud bursting, defacto cloud standards (e.g. Amazon AWS API’s), cloud developer support programs, evolving operations needs for cloud deployments and the viability of telcos as cloud service providers…

Information and communication technology specialist Fujitsu announced the development of software offerings that help customers use big data. The new lineup consists of parallel distributed processing and complex event-processing products, standard technologies in big data applications, and products to employ big data in a range of uses.

The offerings include two new products: Interstage Big Data Complex Event Processing Server V1, which is a complex event-processing solution, and Interstage eXtreme Transaction Processing Server V1, an extreme transaction solution. Fujitsu is also releasing an enhanced version of its Symfoware Server V11 database solution. Currently available in Japan, Fujitsu said it plans to gradually roll out the products worldwide…

Amidst all the hype surrounding cloud computing, the hybrid cloud approach– the blending of both private and public cloud environments–is gaining traction. But the reality of building a bridge that effectively leverages the strengths of both architectures is ending up to be a greater challenge than many anticipated.

With private cloud implementations set to accelerate this year, hybrid clouds, too, are destined to grow in popularity. TeraDiscoveries, Inc., announced today a strategic relationship with Microsoft Corp. that will help it extend the reach of its drug discovery process. Microsoft is providing support and cloud computing time on Windows Azure that TeraDiscoveries will apply to identify inhibitors of 25 biological targets.

TeraDiscoveries will use its Inverse Design software that runs computational models to quickly scan virtual chemical libraries to find the strongest inhibitors of a specific biological target. The process identifies novel drug candidates that feature good clinical trial properties and demonstrate low probability of toxic side effects.

"Designing new drugs that bind to a specified protein target requires finding the best molecule in a vast chemical space. Our approach searches this space much more efficiently and cost-effectively than traditional methods," says Ed Addison, CEO of TeraDiscoveries. "Our strategic relationship with Microsoft enables us to partner with smaller pharmaceutical or medical research companies in the pursuit of these molecules."…

Data is Exploding

The cost of computing has declined enormously. In 1970, you could buy 10 calculations per second for US$ 1000. In 2010, you could buy 10 billion calculations per second for the same US$ 1000. In 1970, there were approximately 31,744 terabytes (TB) of data on computerized records — remember, today you can buy a 4 TB external hard drive. In 2010, that number was 1.4 billion TB. In 2015, it’s predicted that mobile devices alone will generate 6.3 exabytes of data — that’s 6.6 million TB. The total amount of data will grow 50 times in the next 8 years…
