Virtustream, Inc., the leading enterprise class cloud solutions provider, today announced it has been included by Gartner, Inc. in the “Magic Quadrant for Cloud Infrastructure as a Service,”i which includes the leading 15 vendors, on a global basis, and evaluates only solutions that are delivered in an entirely standardized fashion — specifically, public cloud IaaS, along with private cloud IaaS that uses the same or a highly similar platform.

According to Gartner, “the market for cloud compute infrastructure as a service (a virtual data center of compute, storage and network resources delivered as a service) is still maturing and rapidly evolving. As each provider has unique offerings, the task of sourcing their services must be handled with care.”…

BetterCloud Builds Cloud Services Brokerages Management Tool

By David

Grazed from TalkinCloud. Author: CJ Arlotta.

Google (GOOG) Apps developer BetterCloud has launched FlashPanel Reseller Console, a dashboard tool that lets cloud services brokerages (CSBs) set up, manage and monitor customer accounts. The console also provides insights into upsells to customer accounts, such as identification of training opportunities within customer sites based on below average Google Apps usage rates and notifications about upcoming customer account renewals.

BetterCloud founder and CEO David Politis said in his prepared remarks that resellers need more tools to help engage with and manage customer accounts. "VARs are core to the success of Google Apps and with the Reseller Console, we’re hoping to automate and simplify a lot of the back office tasks they must see to on a daily basis," he said…

The three layers of cloud

By David

Grazed from ITWeb. Author: Joanne Carew.

Two to three years ago, if you asked most people about cloud computing, only a few would have described it as a "game changer". Others would have said there is no substance to the technology and that the buzz around cloud is all marketing hype.

Today, we are seeing that our previous ideas about cloud were incorrect, said Bob Plumridge, EMEA CTO at Hitachi Data Systems, at the company’s Information Forum in Johannesburg yesterday. Plumridge pointed out that cloud is enabling many of the big data projects that large organisations are tackling at the moment. "If you can’t move data around and share it easily, you are going to find it extremely difficult to analyse and utilise the data. Cloud enables this flexibility," he said…

By David

After spending the past two years beefing up its cloud storage and file sharing app for use in large enterprises, Box has turned its attention back to small and medium businesses with a new subscription plan. The company today introduced its Starter tier, priced at $5 per user per month for teams of as many as 10 people. It includes pooled storage of 100GB and an individual file size limit of 2GB.

The new Starter tier is sandwiched between the existing Personal plan, which is free for individual users, and the Business plan, which costs $15 per user per month and includes basic IT administration and security features…

Implementing cloud strategies

By David

Grazed from Lexology. Author: Editorial Staff.

As companies struggle with how to develop cloud strategies that are both cost effective and protect sensitive consumer and corporate data, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) can provide hands-on information to the private sector to help implement a reasonable cloud computing solution. Though NIST provides guidelines to the U.S. Government, the private sector can learn, too. Recently, NIST has stressed that the three major challenge areas for adoption of cloud computing are security, portability and interoperability.

In June, NIST released draft Special Publication (SP 500-299) as part of its ongoing obligation to develop technical and security standards for federal agencies as they adopt cloud computing solutions. This draft has been undergoing further comment and review. While these standards will establish protocol for procurement of cloud services by the federal government, they are likely to impact the use of cloud services and contractual terms in the private sector…

Despite recent cloud service outages, security a bigger concern than availability

By David

Grazed from PCWorld. Author: Tony Bradley.

Wow. No sooner did I finish writing about how the Google and Microsoft outages were not a reason to lose confidence in the cloud, than Amazon went down. The online retail site—and its associated cloud services—were down for just under half an hour Monday afternoon. I stand by my assertion that the sky is not falling, but there’s more to using the cloud than just availability. Amazon.com was the third major cloud service to suffer an outage in the last week.

Over on WindowsITPro.com, Paul Thurrott summed up the hysteria over cloud outages nicely. “And of course, the cloud computing doubters—who, like global warming doubters are increasingly at odds with reality—will argue that such outages prove that our move away from on-premises hardware and local storage is nothing but a temporary trend.”Let’s start with some perspective, breaking down the math like I did yesterday for Google and Microsoft. Amazon was down for about 25 minutes (although I’ve seen reports from 15 minutes to 40 minutes)…
