Oracle, under pressure from competitor Workday, announced upgrades to Oracle Human Capital Management Cloud and Oracle Talent Management Cloud at Oracle OpenWorld Monday. Workday is an eight-year-old SaaS startup that went public last October and raised $685 million. It’s using the funds to compete for new human capital management (HCM) software users and existing Oracle PeopleSoft customers. SAP, IBM and Salesforce.com are also stepping up their efforts in human capital management.

Oracle is fighting back from its position as a deeper and more fully integrated software stack. Monday, the first full day of Oracle OpenWorld in San Francisco, Oracle president Mark Hurd emphasized enhancements to the Oracle HCM products…

Cloud, Mobile to Drive Growth for Microsoft

By David

Grazed from TheEpochTimes. Author: Catherine Yang.

Microsoft Corp. has been criticized for being late to the game on many fronts. As Microsoft tries to remain a relevant player in markets they historically have ignored, questions abound as to how the company planned to overcome its competitors. Executives answered, in their first financial analysts meeting in two years, with much optimism but without much detail.

“Google happens to say let’s not have any profit be in the device. Let’s move it all into search. We and Apple kind of have a different view of the world,” Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said at the Sept. 19 meeting. “Amazon, I don’t know where they want to put market profit, they don’t seem to put the profit anywhere. And that’s not a shot, it’s just I can’t tell you what profit stream is important to them the way we can about us or Apple or Google.”…

Could computing security has gathered a lot of attention in recent times, but some key areas of progress are still being neglected. One such area is the aspect of dynamic offloading in mobile cloud computing (MCC). Using different solutions, the energy consumption and communications costs of cloud computing can be optimized. Furthermore, the decision process such as the Markov process can help achieve optimal offloading policy.

Ask an engineer: What is cloud computing?

By David

Grazed from MIT. Author: Editorial Staff.

First of all, cloud computing has nothing to do with clouds, says Srini Devadas, an Edwin Sibley Webster Professor of Electrical Engineering and a researcher in Computer Science in the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. And second, the term “cloud computing” may have become a buzz phrase in recent years, but the technology behind it has been around for at least fifteen. One of the first major “cloud” milestones occurred in 1999 with the arrival of Salesforce, and the 2002 introduction of Amazon Web Services was the beginning of what has become a whole weather system of computing options.

“The simplest way to define cloud computing,” says Devadas, “is that it involves using a computer that is not on your desk.” Instead, you’re using a computing service powered by a cluster of hardware somewhere in the world and delivered to your terminal over the Internet…

Cloud Computing: How to master disruptive technologies

By David

Grazed from ComputerWorld. Author: Julia King.

Social, mobile and analytics technologies are disrupting business as usual at companies in all industries. In 2014, the disruption will continue, morphing into a new kind of business as usual with enterprises expanding their reliance on the cloud, mobile technologies, social media and, increasingly, predictive analytics. The goals: reducing costs, creating new revenue streams, boosting customer satisfaction and beefing up brand awareness, to name a few.

In the next three to five years, the five technologies most likely to upset the status quo are social networking, the cloud and software as a service (SaaS), self-service IT, predictive analytics and mobile payments, according to Computerworld’s Forecast 2014 survey of 221 IT executives…

Cloud Computing: Larry Ellison promises ‘ungodly’ speed with new in-memory Oracle database option

By David

Grazed from National Monitor.  Author: Craig Manning.

Larry Ellison, the ambitious CEO of enterprising hardware and software company Oracle, is taking the company’s cloud computing options to the next level, according to a new report from PCWorld.com. The article states that Ellison and Oracle are preparing to enter the competitive and in-demand world of in-memory computing services, an announcement that should be music to the ears of tech gurus and information technology experts everywhere.

For those who are unfamiliar, in-memory computing services like the one Oracle will soon offer work similarly to other cloud-based server options, storing a company’s data offsite and off-setting the cost of purchasing physical servers. The difference with in-memory computing is that all of the company’s information is stored in a server’s random access memory (or RAM) rather than in the dark depths of the system. This arrangement allows for easier and faster access of information, simpler analysis of massive data banks, and economical drops in computing prices. In other words, in-memory computing is a big boon for businesses anywhere, and it was only a matter of time before a company like Oracle was going to join the fray…

Cloud Computing: Oracle’s Hurd – Sluggish BRICs hurting IT

By David

Grazed from CNBC.  Author:  Drew Sandholm.

Reduced demand for information technology has hit the sector like a ton of bricks. Actually, make that BRICs.  "One thing that has hurt IT has been the BRIC countries," Oracle‘s co-president, Mark Hurd, told CNBC on Monday, referring to Brazil, Russia, India and China, which are all deemed to be developing markets for business.

Over the last several years, however, the BRICs had provided considerable demand growth to the IT space, Hurd said.  A recent increase in its sales force has helped Oracle have "good performance" in Europe, Hurd said, but the European market overall has been "flattish at best….
