Portability challenges for government agencies moving to hybrid clouds

By David

Grazed from ComputerWorld. Author: Jeff Baxter.

The inaugural IDC Government Insights report, released earlier this year, paints a revealing picture of how the U.S. Federal Government is spending and planning to spend information technology (IT) dollars on cloud solutions.

The report projects that federal cloud services spending will reach $1.7 billion in FY2014, and, boosted in part by U.S. Federal CIO Cloud Council efforts the past few years to usher agencies away from standalone computing to the Cloud, we are starting to see more tangible evidence of not only federal agency cloud spending, but also results…

High stakes threaten EU cloud strategy

By David

Grazed from Diginomica. Author: Phil Wainwright.

European policy makers are in a race against time to flesh out their strategy for encouraging the development and adoption of cloud services in Europe. But with so many different stakeholders to satisfy and so much at stake — almost €1 trillion in estimated economic benefits for example — the risk of failure is high.

The potential prize is the creation of a single market for cloud computing that allows European businesses to participate globally in the digital era. But it could all go off the rails in a matter of months.Speaking at the EuroCloud Congress in Luxembourg earlier today, Andreas Tegge, vice president of EU government relations at SAP, warned of the risks if the cloud industry fails to produce answers to the policy makers’ concerns:…

Increase Productivity with an Integrated Mobility Manager

By David

Grazed from CIO. Author: Christopher Janoch.

I sat next to a senior sales executive from a large cellular reseller on a plane recently, who was bitterly complaining about how mobile devices were complicating his life. He was carrying two cell phones, an iPad and a laptop—all with different applications and services—and he was struggling to access and email a document from the device he created it on to another. His struggle is a common one; studies show that more than 52 percent of information workers use three or more devices for work.

In another example from a recent client engagement, I was interviewing a remote office manager who was required by her office to carry two separate laptops—one for use in her client’s network environment (which she used for meetings, presentations, and project scheduling), and another for her company’s native environment (which she used for resource management, corporate email, and secure document access)…

Grazed from ScientificComputing. Author: Editorial Staff.

Based on the success of the recent ISC Cloud and ISC Big Data conferences in Heidelberg, the organizers will once again conduct the conferences in tandem next fall. The ISC Cloud’14 event will be held on September 29th and 30th, followed by ISC Big Data’14 from October 1st to 2nd, again at the Heidelberg Marriott.

A diversity of use cases at ISC Cloud’13

“We see a continuous and growing interest among researchers, engineers, and service providers to participate in this event as there is no other conference that is dedicated to addressing the HPC cloud topic in such depth, and the addition of digital manufacturing into this year’s program made this year’s conference an absolute highlight,” said Wolfgang Gentzsch, the ISC Cloud’13 chair…

IaaS Performance Benchmarks Part 2: AWS

By David

Grazed from NetworkComputing. Author: Joe Masters Emison.

This is the second part in a series of articles about creating my own IaaS performance benchmarking project. In the first part, I explained the methodology I’m using to I’m test instance types across major IaaS providers. In this part, I post the results from my tests of Amazon Web Services instance types.

I launched more than 175 AWS VMs across current instance types, in all three U.S. regions (East, West, and Oregon), and in three availability zones (AZs) per region. (West and Oregon only have three AZs, and East — for me — only has three AZs that allowed me to launch all of the instance types in it). I ran instance-store-backed instances for every instance type I could; I ran EBS-backed for the t1.micro, and HVM- EBS-backed for the m3s and high-computing instance types…

Cloud gaining traction as state and local cost-cutter

By David

Grazed from GCN. Author: Rutrell Yasin.

Almost half of U.S. state and local governments in a recent survey by the Unisys Corp. are planning or are already involved in cloud computing projects, according to the firm, which found that hardware and software cost savings were top drivers moving agencies to the cloud. The research, conducted for Unisys by the Center for Digital Government, surveyed 109 IT managers from 18 states between July and August 2013.

In addition to cost savings, about one-fifth of the respondents said the ability to meet the demands of a growing mobile workforce was a top incentive for cloud adoption. Forty-six percent of all respondents reported they have or are planning to launch mobility or bring-your-own-device programs…
