As companies migrate more data from on-premises data centers to the cloud, they are looking for easy and inexpensive ways to do so. Fully a quarter of businesses are moving data out of the US as a result of revelations about the scope of data gathering by the US National Security Agency, claims Canada-based cloud hosting provider PEER 1 Hosting. Some qualifications apply: The survey behind the company’s assertion doesn’t cover 25% of all businesses. It describes findings from a 10-minute survey of 300 small companies — 250 employees or less — based in the UK and Canada.

When the sample is confined to just Canadian companies, 33% say they plan to move data out of US datacenters. Evidence of that exodus isn’t extensive: PEER 1 was able to point to one client, iDigital, that has been dealing with data flight. Matt McKinney, managing director of iDigital, an 85-person cloud hosting provider based in British Columbia, Canada, said in a phone interview that privacy is particularly important to Canadians, noting that the country has been aggressive in dealing with online privacy through its regulatory agencies…

Two big names in technology held events in New York this week to declare the beginning of a third big wave in computing, but they were talking about different waves. On Wednesday, Salesforce.com welcomed in the connected computing era, pointing to mobile, social, cloud, and billions of connected sensors and devices as things that will transform our personal lives, industries, and the ways organizations interact with individuals.

Giving its own spin to the Internet of Things, Salesforce talked up the "Internet of Customers," seeing connected aircraft engines, cars, appliances, tablets, phones, wrist watches, and other devices as ultimately connected to somebody’s customer. German software giant SAP said today that cloud-computing boosted sales and earnings in the fourth quarter of 2013 and the year as a whole. Cloud computing is a term used to cover many functions of external and shared resources to provide computer services such as the distant storage of information.

According to preliminary figures, SAP’s underlying or operating profit rose by 10 per cent to $4.47 billion (RM19.8 billion) in the whole of 2013 and revenues advanced by 4 per cent to $16.81 billion. In the fourth quarter alone, operating profit was up 13 per cent at $1.8 billion and sales grew by 2 per cent to $5.1 billion. The software giant said it would publish more details of the earnings figures on January 21.

Want to reduce carbon emissions from cloud computing? A bunch of algorithms developed by computer scientists at Trinity College Dublin and IBM Research in Dublin can help reduce the carbon cost of cloud computing, the researchers claim. The algorithms, collectively called Stratus, can model a worldwide network of connected data centers and predict how best to use them to keep carbon emissions low. However, they also carry off the necessary computing and deliver the required data.

"For the simulation, the scientists modeled a scenario inspired by Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) data center setup that incorporated three key variables: carbon emissions, cost of electricity, and the time needed for computation and data transfer on a network. Amazon EC2 has data centers in Ireland and the U.S. states of Virginia and California, so the experimental model placed data centers there too, and it used queries from 34 sources in different parts of Europe, Canada, and the United States as tests," according to the IEEE Sprectrum report on the research…
