A shortage of appropriately skilled staff is holding back organisations’ cloud computing initiatives, according to panellists at Computing’s IT Leaders’ Forum. Potential staff with the right mix of skills, or who can fit into the new categories of skills required to keep organisations’ cloud initiatives running smoothly – including the ability to challenge suppliers in terms of their offerings, architecture and cost – will be in high demand for the foreseeable future.

Rocco Labellarte, CIO at the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, described it as "bloody hard" to get the right people in. The borough is in the process of shifting some 350 organisational applications to the cloud and, therefore, the kinds of skills required of its IT department is changing…

It may sound like an oxymoron, but small computing is getting big and big computing is getting small. And it is going to be the combination of these two "mega-trends" which will be key to the success of wearable technology and lead to everything and anything around us becoming connected.

The continued miniaturisation of computing will allow us to turn anything into a computer while being able to connect directly to a vast cloud computing infrastructure will make these devices more powerful than ever before. Intel’s chief futurist Steve Brown believes that technology – and computing specifically – becoming smaller and smaller is "the key thing that is now allowing us now to think about computers becoming wearable."…

Last week a new set of privacy principles regarding the handling of personal information came into effect. The changes relate to how businesses handle, use and store personal information. While there are significant changes with a number of benefits for individuals, there have been some misconceptions in the industry with regards to privacy in the cloud that I’d like to address. Here are the top 5 myths that I’ve seen about privacy in the cloud.

1. Use of cloud computing is the biggest privacy risk factor

The notion that the use of cloud computing is the biggest Privacy risk factor that Australian businesses need to worry about is simply untrue. Ponemon Institute’s Survey on Data Security Breaches revealed that 69 per cent of serious data leaks were due to employee activities or errors. So a lack of internal policies and controls, direct marketing activities, poorly trained staff, stolen laptops and offshore call centres are all bigger risks than cloud computing. While Australian companies need to be wary of the new legislation and how it affects their IT infrastructure, the direct business benefits of cloud far outweigh these alleged risks…

Adoption of internal cloud technologies have increased by 50 percent in a year while public cloud usage seems to have stalled, according to the most recent survey of The Open Data Center Alliance (ODCA) members. The ODCA is a global organisation that was formed in 2010 to promote the adoption of interoperable, non-proprietary cloud technologies. This was its third annual survey investigating adoption of its members’ cloud computing and data analytics technologies.

The survey found that in the past 12 months, the number of respondents already running more than 40 percent of their workloads in internal clouds had increased from 20 percent to 31 percent. This figure is expected to grow as high as 70 percent by 2016. For the first time in its annual survey, the ODCA measured the adoption of virtual private and community cloud…

However, in after-hours trading, investors largely focused on the miss, with Oracle shares falling nearly 4% to $37.47, after the software giant reported adjusted earnings per share of 68 cents a share, versus analyst estimates of 70 cents a share. At one point in after-hours trading, Oracle’s shares were down 5.3%. Oracle ORCL -2.68% attributed the 2-cent miss to currency issues in Venezuela and their impact on its Venezuelean subsidiary..

“EPS [earnings per share] this year was reduced by two cents due to a currency re-measurement non-operating loss for Venezuela that obviously had not been included in my guidance,” Oracle Chief Financial Officer and Co-President Safra Catz told analysts in a conference call…

Much has been made recently about "green" clouds. Along with server agility and data portability, many providers sell public clouds as environmentally friendly. On the surface, green cloud computing makes sense: If data moves from redundant local stacks to a single superserver, especially one shared with other midsize companies, one might expect the natural result to be lower energy consumption and a greener outlook. This is not always the case. Conservation is the current buzzword, but intelligent consumption may provide greater benefits over the long term.

Measure Twice, Scale Once

As discussed by a March 16 Forbes article, several large companies such as Facebook and eBay have provided the code they use to track power and water consumption in their data centers. eBay published its code last year whereas Facebook just went public as part of the Open Compute Project. The social giant split the code into pieces: A user interface component and a back-end data aggregator that can be made to work together or separately depending on business needs…
