How the Internet Defines Database as a Service in Spring 2014

With Oracle’s entry into database-as-a-service and IBM’s recent acquisition of Cloudant, database-as-a-service has been a hot topic. As of March of 2014, DBaaS, an acronym of database-as-a-service, is still a term that has multiple definitions. When searching for the definition of DBaaS, the web returned multiple results and definitions. These results are consolidated here in this post.
How Experts Define “DBaaS”
Many experts have a different definition for the term Database-as-a-Service. Here are some definitions from various sources that I found insightful:
“An on-demand, secure, and scalable self-service database platform that automates provisioning and administration of databases and can be used by developers and nontechnical personnel.” – Forrester, October 2012…
Driven by a growing demand for an application which helps in running businesses efficiently, albeit with a reduced IT infrastructure cost, US-based network solution provider Riverbed Technologies has come up with location independent computing (LIC). “Very simply put, location independent computing is a concept that helps efficient delivery of applications and data from private data centres or the cloud, regardless of where it actually resides and regardless of where the actual user resides,” said Steve Dixon, senior vice-president, sales, Asia-Pacific (APAC) and Japan.
Microsoft hit its highest level since 2000 Tuesday and was one of the top five performing stocks in the Standard & Poor’s 500 on increasing chatter a version of Office is coming for Apple’s iPad. Shares of Microsoft gained $1.50, or 3.9%, to $39.55 in the stock’s biggest one-day move in seven months. The stock is up nearly 6% this year, outpacing the broader market. Tuesday’s rally alone lifted Microsoft’s market value $12.5 billion to $328.3 billion.

Moving to restore trust in cloud computing services, Google said Thursday that it has made encrypted HTTPS connections mandatory for Gmail.
