Infor is tackling the large automotive industry vertical and hoping to get more companies in the sector on board with cloud computing. Infor launched CloudSuite Automotive, an extension of its recently announced CloudSuite offering for Amazon Web Services (AWS). Like its non-verticial-specific version, CloudSuite Automotive is available via AWS. And according to Infor, the cloud solution was designed with the specific needs of the automotive sector in mind.

"With more than 80 percent of the world’s largest automotive suppliers running Infor applications, we’ve seen first-hand the interest from the industry to move to the cloud to take advantage of its clear benefits, like easier maintenance and lower TCO, that aren’t necessarily offered with on-premise applications," said John Bermudez, vice president of Product Management at Infor, in a prepared statement…

At last week’s BUILD developer conference in San Francisco, Microsoft announced major changes to their cloud computing platform, Windows Azure. These changes included added support for foreign languages and third-party tools, and the introduction of the Azure Preview Portal, which allows developers to build and manage instances while they are running. These improvements will go a long way to helping Microsoft compete with other cloud computing giants like Google and Amazon.

When Satya Nadella was appointed CEO of Microsoft in February 2014, the company was stagnant in terms of product innovation. The man Nadella replaced, Steve Ballmer, does deserve credit for raking in enormous profits for the company. But under Ballmer’s tenure Microsoft lagged behind the technology developments of its competitors, especially in the realm of cloud computing…

When reading a recent article by Red Hat CEO Jim Whitehurst, I was struck by a comparison made between OpenStack and the interstate highway system. The article in Wall Street and Technology, called "OpenStack: Five things every executive needs to know," mostly focused on the high points of where OpenStack is in its development cycle. But the highway analogy stuck with me.

Part of what made the interstate highway system successful was its standardization and its open nature. "Unlike the early days of the railroads, where track gauges differed and companies refused to interconnect their networks, interstates are open to all who wish to use them," Whitehurst writes. It is a model of IT management, wherein a user decides to manage some of their critical information resources in-house and host others on the cloud. Following are some of the scenarios wherein businesses may opt for a hybrid cloud solution:

• Data is extremely sensitive and the management cannot risk hosting it on public infrastructure, but at the same time, wants to leverage scalability in the cloud
• The business is not confident of entrusting data to a third party, especially when it does not know where on the cloud the data is hosted

The race to $0 is heating up in the Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) space:

• March 25th – Google fires the first salvo in the pricing wars at their Google Cloud Platform Live event by reducing GCE by 32% across all sizes, regions, and classes.
• March 26th – AWS quickly responds by reducing EC2, S3, RDS, ElastiCache, and Elastic MapReduce pricing effective April 1st.
• March 31st – Microsoft wants to play too and after renaming Windows Azure to Microsoft Azure, they are cutting prices on compute by up to 35% and storage by up to 65%.

Bingo. Bango. Bongo… Hey Rackspace, where you at? And this isn’t the start of the price wars either. Things started in 2012 and continued through 2013 (see RightScale’s solid cloud price analysis for 2013). The above is just the most reactive back-and-forth we’ve seen yet…
