Cloud computing inherits the security issues pertaining in the technologies that it uses, which consists chiefly of the risk of a breach in the integrity or confidentiality of information. One security measure is encrypting stored data, but there are drawbacks with encryption and it does not always protect data.

In cloud services, it is very important that the service provider has the trust of his customer and he does not exploit this in any way. There is no way to be 100% sure of your cloud service providers being trustworthy. There are certain legal issues entangled with cloud security as well, because there are certain laws that cloud service providers should comply with and these laws vary from country to country. Users have no idea or control over where or in what jurisdiction their data is being physically stored over the cloud…

It’s a sudden death overtime for any and all solution providers that have not made a big cloud computing bet. All you need to do to see that time is running out is look at some of the major moves executed by solution providers and vendors anxious to up their cloud solutions game. No matter how you cut it, customer adoption of the cloud is happening at a faster pace than anyone anticipated, and it has all comers scrambling to play catch-up in what is sure to be an era of heightened channel conflict.

On the vendor front, Cisco Systems just scored a triple whammy at its Partner Summit with its own public cloud offering, the elimination of the Silver designation, and the requirement that Gold status partners invest more heavily in Cisco Powered Cloud and managed services offerings…

The cost of cloud computing is rapidly declining, and for the past few years, Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) has been dictating the pace of this decline. Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) has been matching the price cuts of Amazon, ensuring that its Azure cloud is competitive, but Amazon has always led the way.

With Google’s (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL) recent slashing of its own cloud computing prices, Amazon was forced on the defensive, cutting prices reactively instead of proactively. This marks an important shift, and the cloud computing price war now ensuing will certainly lower the margins of all companies involved. Smaller companies like Rackspace (NYSE: RAX) will be hit the hardest, but of the big three, Amazon will be hurt more than the rest…

Infor is tackling the large automotive industry vertical and hoping to get more companies in the sector on board with cloud computing. Infor launched CloudSuite Automotive, an extension of its recently announced CloudSuite offering for Amazon Web Services (AWS). Like its non-verticial-specific version, CloudSuite Automotive is available via AWS. And according to Infor, the cloud solution was designed with the specific needs of the automotive sector in mind.

"With more than 80 percent of the world’s largest automotive suppliers running Infor applications, we’ve seen first-hand the interest from the industry to move to the cloud to take advantage of its clear benefits, like easier maintenance and lower TCO, that aren’t necessarily offered with on-premise applications," said John Bermudez, vice president of Product Management at Infor, in a prepared statement…

At last week’s BUILD developer conference in San Francisco, Microsoft announced major changes to their cloud computing platform, Windows Azure. These changes included added support for foreign languages and third-party tools, and the introduction of the Azure Preview Portal, which allows developers to build and manage instances while they are running. These improvements will go a long way to helping Microsoft compete with other cloud computing giants like Google and Amazon.

When Satya Nadella was appointed CEO of Microsoft in February 2014, the company was stagnant in terms of product innovation. The man Nadella replaced, Steve Ballmer, does deserve credit for raking in enormous profits for the company. But under Ballmer’s tenure Microsoft lagged behind the technology developments of its competitors, especially in the realm of cloud computing…

When reading a recent article by Red Hat CEO Jim Whitehurst, I was struck by a comparison made between OpenStack and the interstate highway system. The article in Wall Street and Technology, called "OpenStack: Five things every executive needs to know," mostly focused on the high points of where OpenStack is in its development cycle. But the highway analogy stuck with me.

Part of what made the interstate highway system successful was its standardization and its open nature. "Unlike the early days of the railroads, where track gauges differed and companies refused to interconnect their networks, interstates are open to all who wish to use them," Whitehurst writes.
