SAP technology chief Vishal Sikka, champion of the companys Hana in-memory computing platform, is leaving the company in a major management shakeup shortly before co-CEO Bill McDermott is expected to be named sole CEO.  Sikka, who oversaw of all of SAPs product development, is leaving SAP effectively immediately for personal reasons, SAP said late Sunday.

No company in the industry can do what SAP can do in the cloud with the SAP Hana platform today, SAP co-founder and supervisory board chairman Hasso Plattner said in a prepared statement. I would like to personally thank Vishal for his contribution to take SAP to this stage. We will remain friends as he pursues the next step in his journey…

For all of the hype about cloud computing in recent years, when it comes to the cloud for deploying supply chain execution (SCE) software such as warehouse management system (WMS) solutions, the numbers tell a pretty modest story.  While some other enterprise software categories such as customer relationship management (CRM) have seen cloud solutions catch on in a significant way, the SCE segment lags behind.

For instance, cloud-based WMS sales in 2013 only accounted for about 8 percent of the WMS market, according to Chad Eschinger, an analyst with Gartner Research.  By comparison, Gartner estimates that 45 percent of the CRM market was cloud-based in 2013, while the overall supply chain management software market was 21 percent cloud in 2013…

IBM aims to make cloud environments more efficient and scalable with a new job scheduling system that the company refers to as "air traffic controllers."
IBM researchers have come up with a method of deploying what the company refers to as digital "air traffic controllers” to help make the cloud computing environment more efficient and more scalable.  The new invention helps manage how resources are used and work is done within a cloud by distributing control throughout the interconnected systems, reducing bottlenecks and increasing efficiency.

The IBM Research-built cloud computing invention, U.S. Patent #8645745: Distributed Job Scheduling in a Multi-Nodal Environment, was originally designed to help manage resources in high-performance computing systems used for government and academic research. These systems consist of hundreds or thousands of computing resources that are connected to perform complex tasks where demands for system resources can rise and fall dynamically—similar to the model for cloud computing, IBM said…
