Mirantis is aiming to make it easier for enterprises to deploy OpenStack, the open source infrastructure for cloud computing. This week, the company launched a Web-based database listing vendors who offer OpenStack-compatible solutions. The database is available now as a Web-based dashboard on Mirantis’s website. The company derived the information on OpenStack compatibility from the OpenStack DriverLog, which keeps track of drivers and plugins that support OpenStack.

The dashboard does more than simply aggregate information from DriverLog into a convenient interface, however. It also offers configuration instructions for vendors’ products, information on whether a vendor’s OpenStack products have passed or failed OpenStack integration tests and contact information for vendors…

Some might think we’re still in the early days of cloud adoption with agencies focused on simple application hosting – moving email to the cloud – to meet mandates. However, the numbers tell a different story. Recent projections from International Data Corp. predict that federal cloud services spending alone will reach $1.7 billion by fiscal year 2014. By 2017, the federal government will spend nearly $9 billion on cloud computing.

The research investigated the future of investment banking to come to this conclusion and warned that financial institutions need to move away from tradition and start embracing new technologies. “Investment banking has always been cyclical business,” claims the report.

Alibaba Group’s cloud computing unit, called Aliyun (or AliCloud), said today that its first data center in Hong Kong will launch on May 12. This is significant because it marks Aliyun’s first step toward international expansion. The announcement comes less than a week after Alibaba filed for its U.S. public offering, which is expected to be one of the largest tech IPOs ever. It is important to note, however, that Aliyun does not look like it plans to expand into the U.S. Instead, the subsidiary is targeting Chinese businesses operating in the Greater China region and Southeast Asia.

As Alibaba explained in its announcement, Chinese companies that want to set up business outside mainland China usually need to add Web servers in local markets to handle additional traffic. This means that they have to deal with a new set of Internet regulations in each country. Renting Aliyun servers means that they will be able to sidestep regulations, lowering costs and barriers to entry. Aliyun already has three data centers in the mainland Chinese cities of Hangzhou, Qingdao, and Beijing…
