Blue Coat Cloud Service (BCCS) has been announced, with Web Security as the first module. The idea is to bring enterprise-class protection to a wider range of customers.

BCCS builds on the company’s WebPulse service that rates web content. Company officials claim there have been no "significant" outages of WebPulse over six years.

Web Security combines WebPulse and inline malware scanning for content and classification, and provides granular access controls. Blue Coat officials gave the example of allowing employees to access Facebook while blocking photo and video uploads.

Good performance is achieved in part by dynamically routing traffic through the closest Blue Coat data centre to the user’s current location.

"The rapid evolution of Web-based threats, coupled with a shift in organisational structure, demands a security solution that can respond in real time to protect all users, all the time, anywhere," said Rajeev Mitroo, Blue Coat’s managing director for Australia and New Zealand. "The Blue Coat Cloud Service does just that, extending the reach of our enterprise-class leading Web security technology to all organisations," he added.

Web Security for Blue Coat Cloud Service is currently in beta, and will be released by the end of April. Pricing has yet to be announced.
