Big Switch Networks, an OpenFlow company bringing the benefits of virtualization and cloud architecture to enterprise networks, today announced that it has been selected as one of three finalists for the UP-START 2011 Most Promising Startup Cloud Award.

The UP-START Award finalists are disruptive and next-generation cloud computing companies, as well as innovative stealth mode and emerging solution providers who are defining cloud technology. The panel of judges, representing recognized leaders in technology, evaluated 350 nominations before selecting a shortlist of finalists. Winners will be announced at this week’s UP Cloud Computing Conference…

The UP Cloud Computing Conference will showcase innovative and leading edge cloud providers of IaaS, SaaS, PaaS and collaboration solutions and provide a forum to discuss the latest technological advances and business dynamics shaping the future of cloud computing.

"As a Software-Defined Networking company, we’re honored to be selected as a finalist for the UP-START 2011 Cloud Awards," said Isabelle Guis, VP of Outbound Marketing at Big Switch Networks. "Cloud networking and cloud computing are converging at a fast pace with their success dependent on each other. This is a nice recognition of our hard work in making networks as manageable and programmable as cloud computing resources."

Guis will present on Big Switch Networks at the UP Cloud Computing Conference on Tuesday, December 6 at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California. Big Switch Networks’ perspective is that networking needs a VMware. Virtualization abstracted the physical hardware from the applications in the compute and storage space to accelerate hardware and software innovation cycles, to reduce management complexity and to make service delivery more agile. Software-Defined Networking will deliver similar transformational benefits to the networking infrastructure.

Big Switch Networks is helping transform today’s networks into open software-defined networks that adapt to customers business needs. Because openness gives customers choice to build best-of-breed networks, Big Switch Networks’ solution is based on an open standard OpenFlow, and the company gives back to open source communities like OpenFlowHub and OpenStack. Big Switch Networks’ solution interoperates with a large eco-system of networking vendors so that customers can virtualize their existing and future infrastructure.
