Ubuntu’s Narwhal rides OpenStack cloud

It’s official: the next Ubuntu will straddle clouds, with Natty Narwhal packing both OpenStack and current favorite Eucalyptus.

Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth has confirmed that Ubuntu 11.04, due in April, will contain APIs that let people fluff their own private clouds built on OpenStack or Eucalyptus.

Verecloud Partners with Intalio to Deliver CRM Cloud Services

Verecloud  and Intalio today announced a partnership to include Intalio’s Cloud offering, starting with its customer relationship management (CRM) solution, on Verecloud’s Nimbus CSB platform.

This partnership addresses the service demands placed on communication service providers (CSPs) within their operational support system (OSS) environment. The integration of Intalio’s cloud-based CRM solution into Verecloud’s offerings is one of the many Intalio | Cloud solutions that Verecloud plans to offer to CSPs through its cloud services brokerage model.

This is according to an article published on the IT Web website by RDB Consulting, which noted software-as-a-service can make things easier for end users, as well as maintenance and administration providers.

Efficiency drive will grow government outsourcing and cloud usage, says Ovum

Government IT will be more open to outsourcing and cloud computing technologies in 2011 as departments work to drive efficiencies, according to analyst house Ovum.

In response to the Comprehensive Spending Review budget cuts, and in an effort to streamline processes, Ovum said that government agencies will be more willing to consider consumption-based and shared delivery models over the next 12 months.

Introduction to Linux Cgroups

A number of users made use of cgroups recently by following the four-line script from Lennart Poettering, rather than patching the kernel, to improve Linux desktop performance. Many users (myself included) tried the script but didn’t at the time pay attention to the fact that it was using the cgroups feature.

Overcoming the Weakest WAN Link in the Global Cloud

With the advent of cloud computing, there is an assumption that we should see a great leap forward in globalization. After all, if we reduce the time it takes to set up IT infrastructure, the more readily we can create applications that can span the globe.

The problem with that theory is that the wide area network (WAN) is the weakest link in the global supply chain. While there may be plenty of available bandwidth in the U.S., the fact remains that network bandwidth in many countries around the world is both limited and expensive.

Oracle unveils global cloud computing road show

Oracle is conducting a cloud computing road show that will hit roughly 80 cities around the world, according to its website.

Attendees will hear from experts who "will share real-world best practices, reference architectures, detailed customer case studies, and more," according to a statement. "You’ll learn how to transform IT into a superior service provider with a strategy and roadmap for building, deploying, and managing an enterprise cloud."
