Three myths clouding CIO judgement

By David
Grazed from CRN.  Author: Steve Hughes.

For the CIO today, perceived barriers to cloud computing remain security, regulation and compliance. The danger that data loss poses to brand equity, customer trust and share price is just the same whether data is stored in a cloud computing or traditional infrastructure model.

This is reflected in legislation which gives the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) authority to levy fines of up to £500,000 on organisations who recklessly lose confidential or personal information…

Oracle Big Data Appliance and Cloud Computing Stands on Shoulders of Giants

By David
Grazed from SmartData Collective.  Author:  David Menninger.

Oracle made several announcements at its recent Open World event demonstrates its strengths in the business computing market but also that it is standing on the shoulders of giants. The company has developed the expertise, processes and market share to scale out the ideas and innovations of others. Don’t get me wrong: That statement is not an indictment. Large organizations often have challenges with innovation. They are not as nimble as their smaller competitors. On the other hand, small organizations often have challenges scaling out their successes. In an earlier post I characterized the software market as a sort of ecosystem, and this is how it works. Large organizations often look to imitate or acquire smaller firms for their innovations…

Automating the Cloud

By David
Grazed from Sys Con Media.  Author: Leslie Muller.

Everybody agrees that automation is key to enabling the cloud. It’s what makes the cloud’s scalability and low cost possible. But if automation isn’t done properly it will actually result in more work for IT staff. Just like the automotive industry evolved from the days of the industrial revolution – when automation was cookie-cutter and cars all looked alike – to the 21st century, where customization is built into the system and buyers can personalize vehicles to their heart’s content, the cloud needs to adopt modern IT automation technologies and practices. Unfortunately, most cloud management tools mimic automation solutions from the early 1900s…

Researchers improve cloud computing reliability

By David
Grazed from EE Times India.  Author:  Editorial Staff.

A group of Cornell University researchers, with the support of NSF and Microsoft, develops methods to improve the reliability of cloud computing and are testing their work in a piece of real cloud.

Cloud computing is a cheaper alternative for storing and processing quickly vast amounts of data. However, as cloud computing applications become larger, potential errors of the system also grow. A Cornell University research team, composed of Ken Birman, professor of computer science; Hakim Weatherspoon, assistant professor of computer science; and research associate Robbert van Renesse, is working on strengthening cloud reliability in hopes of minimising these errors…

As people are getting their heads around the economic benefits of cloud computing–pay just for what you use servers and services–I’ve been hearing a lot of people say they’d use the cloud if only they could move their existing servers to the cloud without a lot of blood, sweat, and toil. This is where Racemi, a cloud-services company, comes in with its easy server migration program…

Should You Train To Be A Cloud Computing Professional? – Part 1

By David
Grazed from Cloud Tweaks.  Author: Sourya Biswas.

Growing up as a high school student in the late 90s, I became interested in computers, and for the first time, considered making a career out of it. When I graduated high school in 2000, the love for computers hadn’t died down and I resolved to study computer engineering. Of course, that was the heyday of the dotcom boom, when any company with the word “technology” in its name had no problem getting millions of dollars in financing. We all know how it ended…

Flat IT funding threatens cloud, mobile computing initiatives

By David
Grazed from Federal Times.  Author: Nichole Blake Johnson.

Federal information technology spending is expected to remain mostly flat over the next five years, with agencies receiving little or no additional funding for administration priorities like cloud computing and data center consolidation, according to a new IT spending forecast by TechAmerica Foundation.

Discretionary budget cuts and greater scrutiny of poor-performing projects and programs will be big factors in keeping IT spending from growing, TechAmerica predicted in a forecast presented Monday…
