Apple Plans A Cleaner Cloud

By David
Grazed from ScientificAmerican.  Author: Larry Greenemeier.

Cloud computing has been hailed as the best way to provide any data to any gadget at any time. Unfortunately, all this ubiquity comes at a cost—the data centers that store, send and receive all of that data consume a lot of energy, most of it from fossil fuels.

Apple has been targeted by Greenpeace as one of the worst offenders. But Apple is trying to shake its image as a dirty data-provider. The company plans to power at least part of its new $1 billion data center in North Carolina using a massive solar array located on about 170 acres of nearby land. The solar panels could produce 20 megawatts of energy. Apple also claims to be building a 5-megawatt, biogas-powered fuel cell near the data center, according to BusinessGreen.com

Some 90 percent of all Web-connected devices will have consumer cloud services tucked into them by the end of 2013, the better to help Web surfers quench their desire to store, synch, stream and share content from any device or platform.

That’s the postulation from researcher Gartner, which defines the "personal cloud" as a system that allows consumers to seamlessly store, sync, stream and share content across devices including smartphones, media tablets, televisions and PCs connected to the Web.

Cloud disaster recovery: what you need to know

By David
Grazed from ITWorld Canada.  Author: Brian Bloom.

Moving your disaster recovery infrastructure to the cloud can help your business save. But picture those savings in dollars, not hours and minutes.

One advantage of cloud computing is its scalability — use only what you need, when you need it. And of course, another is having quick access to remotely stored data.  Since most enterprises don’t face catastrophic data disasters very often, doesn’t that make cloud the perfect choice for DR?  You won’t pay until disaster strikes (which hopefully will be never) and if it does, you’ll be back up and running in no time…

Everything you ever wanted to know about private cloud

By David
Grazed from The Register.  Author: Jon Collins.

The idea of cloud computing usually suggests vast server and storage resources delivered by external providers. The benefits, we are told, are legion: you pay only for what you use, you scale up to what you need, procurement costs are minimal, operational overhead reduced, and so on.

But many organisations remain concerned about handing their informational crown jewels over to a third party – and rightly so if data security or compliance are a concern. The question becomes can IT facilities be maintained in-house but still deliver at least some benefits of the cloud model?

The answer, according to some, is to run a private cloud. Let’s consider the questions you should ask to find out if that is the right solution for you…

Personal clouds to be on majority of devices by 2015, predicts Gartner

By David
Grazed from ComputerWorld.  Author: Brandon Butler.

Within three years the personal cloud will be ubiquitous on consumer devices, Gartner predicts in a research report released Tuesday.

Consumer cloud services that allow users to store, synch, stream and share content over the Internet will be integrated into 90 percent of consumer devices by 2015, the paper predicts.

Technology vendors must stretch their offerings across multiple devices – including smartphones, tablets, televisions and PCs -in order to tap into the $2.2 trillion (1.4 trillion) that consumers are expected to spend in 2012 on content, devices and services, Gartner said…

Who is driving public cloud computing adoption?

By David
Grazed from TechTarget.  Author: Jan Stafford.

That group – IT, user, business, etc. – is pushing hardest for public cloud adoption in your organization, and what internal or external pressures are spurring that group? Who is in charge of your cloud initiatives – CIOs, project managers, system architects or IT?

Consultants from Capgemini have observed many different internal and external change agents in organizations that are considering adopting public clouds, as well as faulty and successful decisions about cloud management leadership. Capgemini’s Mark Skilton sums up and opines on cloud adoption drivers in this article. He also discusses the need for a new type of IT/system administration professional for managing public cloud projects…

Cloud Computing: New technologies for next-generation data centres

By David
Grazed from ZDNet.  Author: Alan Priestley.

I’ve blogged previously on the impact that cloud is having on innovations in the data centre. It’s a constantly evolving story – and one that keeps most of us in the industry on the edge of our seats, reflecting just how deep and pervasive cloud computing has become in the IT enterprise landscape.

Some of these data centre advancements include rethinking how data centres are cooled, including floor design to optimise cooling and airflow, and new concepts such as solar power. The changes are fundamentally necessary and the equation is simple; data centres are costly to run so design needs to be more efficient…
