Atlantic.Net Announces Cloud Platform That Encrypts All Customer Data Stored At Rest Automatically
September 15, 2017Today, Atlantic.Net, a leading cloud hosting solutions provider, announced that the Atlantic.Net Cloud Platform now encrypts all customer data stored at rest by default. As part of an ongoing effort to ensure the privacy of customer data, Atlantic.Net’s world-class encryption will take place at the storage system layer and be implemented in a transparent manner, with no need for configuration by the user. Atlantic.Net believes encryption of customer’s data at rest shouldn’t be an optional feature and is now a requirement of all computing, free of charge.
Data is automatically encrypted prior to being written to the disk using Advanced Encryption Standard 256-bit (AES-256), which is the only publicly accessible encryption cipher approved by the National Security Agency (NSA) for top-secret information and is often included as part of customer compliance requirements. Furthermore, each encryption key used to encrypt data is encrypted with a set of master keys for additional security.
"Encryption of data stored at rest has quickly become one of the most important aspects of a broader data security strategy. Here at Atlantic.Net, we believe encryption of customer’s data at rest shouldn’t be an optional feature, but rather a requirement," said Marty Puranik, CEO of Atlantic.Net. "Encryption in transit and at rest is a central component of our security strategy which will help to ensure data can only be accessed by authorized services within our cloud platforms. Additionally, utilizing encryption helps ensure the privacy of customer data while still allowing our engineers to maintain and support all infrastructure"
Within the Atlantic.Net Cloud Platform, each chunk of customer data is encrypted prior to being written to the storage system. It is then distributed across the storage system in chunks. An unauthorized user would need to have access to not only all chunks of the data they want to access, but also the encryption key(s) corresponding to that encrypted data. The encryption keys are protected by controls that ensure data access is granted by authorized roles at authorized points-in-time. This further helps prevent unauthorized access to data, increasing data security and privacy.
