Life with a large cloud: Lessons learned

By David
Grazed from ComputerWorld.  Author: Bob Violino.

Many companies are just getting started with cloud computing, but others are already well entrenched. Indeed, some organizations in this latter camp have built massive private clouds that support significant portions of their operations.

These giant, multi-petabyte clouds present unique management challenges for CIOs and business leaders, including ensuring adequate security and service levels, and positioning the new cloud offering in such a way that internal customers want to use it. And because so much about cloud services is relatively new, organizations are learning to deal with the hurdles even as they deploy these mega-clouds. The biggest challenge in implementing private clouds is the massive culture and operating model shift from a ‘do-it-for-users’ model to a ‘user self-service’ model."…

Microsoft blames Azure cloud computing outage on leap year

By David
Grazed from V3.co.uk.  Author: Dan Worth.

The outage on Microsoft’s Windows Azure cloud computing platform that caused the government’s G-Cloud service to go offline was the result of a calculation error caused by the extra day in February due to the leap year.

Writing on the Azure blog the firm’s corporate vice president for service and cloud, Bill Laing, said while the firm had still to fully determine the cause of the issue, the extra date in the month appeared the most likely cause…

How Cloud Computing Is Forcing IT Evolution

By David
Grazed from CIO.  Author: Bernard Golden.

I had the privilege of chairing the infrastructure track at last week’s Cloud Connect conference. Three of the presentations were particularly interesting, offering a good perspective on just how dramatic an effect cloud computing is having on IT. Summed up, the capability and agility of cloud computing is forcing an extremely rapid evolution.

In a sense, these effects are akin to what would happen to an established living ecosystem were significant change to occur within. One could expect to see existing species be stressed by the development of new characteristics in the ecosystem, forcing them to adapt rapidly to survive. Those that fail to adapt will, inevitably, dwindle into extinction…

Oracle says cloud computing threatens the role of CIOs

By David
Grazed from TechWorld.  Author: Derek du Preez.

Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) allows businesses to sub-navigate IT through self-service deployment of applications in the cloud, putting the role of the CIO and the IT department at risk.

John Abel, chief architect for Oracle, told attendees at Oracle’s Cloud Conference in London this week that CIOs need to be smart in ensuring that their role isn’t jeopardised by the cloud.

"CIOs need to make sure that they are part of the business conversation early on. For the first time, thanks to cloud computing, the business is able to sub-navigate IT," said Abel. "Project control is becoming increasingly important for CIOs, because now the business thinks that it doesn’t need IT and it can go and procure its own IT capabilities with SaaS."…

7 Keys to a Successful Cloud Contract

By David

Grazed from CampusTechnlogy.  Author:  Dian Schaffhauser.

Moving some aspect of your campus IT operations to the cloud won’t eradicate your worries about that function. But a well-considered contract can go a long way to mitigating your concerns, according to Steve McDonald, general counsel for Rhode Island School of Design.

Since the typical cloud deal starts with a form contract from a vendor, it’s essential that colleges and universities review it to ensure it reflects the actual business terms that have been agreed. Otherwise, "it likely will include only the vendor’s standard terms, which probably won’t be the complete deal and probably won’t favor you," McDonald noted…
