We all know how IT works, the traditional way of building an IT network involves servers, hardware, licenses and software, all of which is an expensive process involving many IT infrastructural demands with sometimes lengthy deployments. This traditional full IT model may be widely used but new technologies are changing the IT industry forever.

Now there are easy, affordable ways to take IT online and ‘virtualise’ the IT processes thanks to Cloud computing. Cloud computing provides easy access via online applications which therefore means there is no involvement of expensive IT hardware. Cloud computing is defined by the National Institute of Standards and Technology as a way of ‘delivering computing as a service’ instead of a product…

Piston Cloud Computing, Inc. today announced a new release of Piston OpenStack™, a software product that automates the orchestration of an entire private cloud environment on x86 servers. Companies building web, mobile, and big data applications use Piston’s secure and cost-effective Amazon Web Services (AWS)-like capabilities to bring new products to market faster.

By managing a group of servers as a single pool of elastic and scalable computing resources, Piston OpenStack improves datacenter efficiency thereby accelerating the application development process. In conjunction with today’s product news, the company also introduced a simple-to-use Piston OpenStack TCO calculator that estimates the total cost of ownership of a Piston private cloud and allows customers to compare it to their AWS bill…

Cloud storage isn’t something that is new in the current era of mobility. Businesses are increasingly resorting to the cloud in an effort to reduce deployment and maintenance costs, while avoiding new hardware costs. Most users know what a cloud provider or database is, but there are some technical terms like IaaS, Saas, PaaS and XaaS they aren’t familiar with. We’re here to make sure that’s no longer the case, what follows is an explanation of some common terminologies everyone should know before embracing this fascinating technology.

Top Cloud Computing Terminologies

IaaS: IaaS stands for Infrastructure-as-a-Service, referring to the use of any cloud by a business to store important data. Organizations often invest hugely in infrastructure and servers, spending a lot of money on their maintenance as well. IaaS provides a viable alternative to the traditional method of in-house storage by offering organizations what they needed (hardware wise) at a much lower rate…

It’s good news/bad news time. The bad news is that someone got his or her hands on nearly 5 million Gmail addresses and corresponding passwords and made them all public. The good news is that even if your Gmail address is on the list, the password may be too old to merit much concern.

The Russian tech blog Habrahabr theorizes that the leaked Gmail addresses and passwords were most likely compiled through phishing scams, use of weak passwords and other common compromises, not as a result of a hacked Google server. Similar databases of email addresses and passwords from Yandex and Mail.ru, two popular Russian-language services, were made public earlier this week…

No "one size fits all" at the Pentagon. The different levels of mission risk at the Defense Department have posed a major challenge to building out DOD’s cybersecurity posture. Now, according to Deputy CIO Richard Hale, the department is working to make distinctions on the varying levels of risk by mission in order to make better decisions.

"Cybersecurity should vary by mission," Hale said in his keynote at the MeriTalk Cloud Computing Brainstorm event in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 10. "I shouldn’t spend as much money on morale and welfare website as I do on nuclear command control, it doesn’t make any sense."…

Josh Garza, the CEO of GAW Miners, first made a name for himself by building one of the top online retail stores for cryptocurrency mining equipment. Garza has pivoted that operation into the cloud by launching what he has dubbed hashlets. These hashlets are designed to create Bitcoins using a combination of ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuits) and cloud data center technology.

CloudWedge first reported on organizations wanting to use cloud to mint Bitcoins back in March 2014. The write up chronicled CloudHashing.com’s method of selling cloud contracts that “Reserves a certain amount of computational power for your own Bitcoin mining endeavours.” Garza and GAW Miners look to gain a piece of this market share by shifting his company from the online retail world. Instead of selling Bitcoin mining hardware, GAW Miners has pivoted into selling cloud mining contracts. According to Garza, the move was met with unprecedented success…

As cloud computing becomes widely adopted, organizations still maintain vastly different schools of thought on what the term “cloud” really means. That’s partly due to the term “cloud computing” being used for a broad collection of services, delivered at many different layers (infrastructure, application platform, software, and business process), and implemented in a variety of different ways (public, private, hybrid, on-premises, and off-premises).

There’s a big difference between “cloud” for bottom-line improvement and “cloud” for top-line improvement; and they can be diametrically opposed strategies. Cloud does not have a single value proposition for all types of services or enterprises, and there are risks to those who ignore its many variations…

Microsoft has begun a months-long rollout of Delve, the first Office 365 application that taps into the suite’s Office Graph machine learning capabilities and maps connections between co-workers, documents, and information.  Delve, announced in March with the code-name Oslo, is designed to automatically surface colleagues, files and data that are more relevant and important to users’ work.

Delve renders these connections via a very visual card-based interface, and bases its output on an analysis of a number of signals and elements from each individual user, such as Exchange Online email message exchanges, OneDrive for Business stored content, SharePoint Online collaboration activity and Yammer enterprise social networking interactions…
