Technology has come to that point where all businesses are migrating to cloud based services. Everything from emails, websites, file sharing to enterprise level software run on cloud services these days. Google is releasing its cheapest Chromebook laptops yet, two versions priced at $149 aimed at undercutting Microsoft’s Windows franchise and gaining ground in even more classrooms.

Various PC manufacturers have been working with Google to design lightweight laptops running on the Chrome operating system since 2011. The newest versions are made by Hisense and Haier. Hisense’s Chromebook can be ordered beginning Tuesday at Walmart.com and Haier’s version can be bought at Amazon.com…

When it comes to today’s marketplaces, there’s no doubt we’re operating in a buyers’ market. Consumers can buy anything almost instantly, from computer software through to the latest movies. We can easily find the information we need, compare and evaluate it immediately, before purchasing directly from the handheld device we’re using. Deliveries are increasingly taking place on the same day, and the whole purchase can be completed within hours.

Given this, it’s no surprise to see brands becoming increasingly customer-centric. Although interestingly, the most successful are likely to be those focused on facilitating the purchase process – empowering consumers to do what they want, when they want, how they want – rather than just improving the overall service delivered…

Healthcare cloud hosting provider Catalyze has raised $4 million from investors, according to a report by Xconomy on Thursday. The latest funding round brings its total funding to $6 million.  Catalyze was backed by existing investors in its latest funding round.

The company raised a $2 million Series A in 2013. Its investors include Arthur Ventures, Baird Capital and Chicago Ventures. Other participants include the State of Wisconsin Investment Board, Gener8tor, Oshkosh, Angels on the Water and individual investors including Mark Bakken and Don Layden…

BMC Software Inc. has had several executive hires over the past few months, but one might help determine its success in a major area of focus for the Houston-based tech company. Phil Harris, a former Cisco executive, was appointed to senior vice president and CTO in January. He’s an expert in cloud computing, having been a part of Cisco’s team, as well as government and industry consulting.

He sees cloud as a key piece to the IT puzzle for BMC’s enterprise customers in the future. "We’re going to see (cloud computing) hockey stick over the next couple of years," Harris told the HBJ. Cloud, in combination with the Internet of Things and consumer IT, will form a new environment for technology in the workplace, he said…

Despite a steady stream of storage technology advances, IBM scientists insist there is still plenty of life left in left in tape storage along with new cloud applications like object storage. IBM Research this week claimed a new storage density record of 123 billion bits of uncompressed data per square inch on inexpensive particulate magnetic tape. The areal recording density is said to be equivalent to a 220-terabyte tape cartridge, the researcher said.

The tape storage milestone is the latest in a series recorded by IBM Research and industrial partner FujiFilm Corp. of Japan. They demonstrated the record tape storage density as part of a project with Swiss-based ETH Zurich, which uses IBM tape storage technology for central data backup…

A study by Meritalk finds, despite a majority (62 percent) of federal agencies in 2010 that reported they would move to cloud-based computing within five years, in a recent poll, just 41 percent of Feds see cloud as an integral component of their overall IT strategy. This latest study demonstrates that, despite the potential savings of $18.9 billion annually, federal agencies are dragging their feet in the migration to cloud services.

In the 2010 survey, just 5 percent stated that they did not intend to ever migrate to cloud services, while 19 percent predicted a shift within two years. Despite the best efforts of cloud vendors, 89 percent of federal agencies polled report being apprehensive about moving IT services and applications to the cloud, and only 51 percent have utilized cloud-only for a limited number of specific applications…

As cloud continues to be mainstream, the question amongst progressive IT departments when rolling out new applications is shifting from “why cloud?” to “which cloud?” Currently, the public cloud is dwarfed by private and on-premise solutions, with VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger stating that the latter represents over 90 per cent of the total business. Furthermore, Gartner has estimated that by 2020, on-premise cloud will account for 70 per cent of the total market.

There are many good reasons for organisations still opting to host their applications on hardware owned and managed in-house. Most organisations still have large investments in technology, people, and processes that cannot simply be written-off; certain workloads still do not suit virtualised or multi-tenanted platforms; renting resources is not always cheaper or better than owning them; and there are valid security and compliance reasons for keeping certain data on premise…

At the AWS Summit being held in San Francisco today, AWS has just announced that its EC2 container service, a service that developers use to run applications within Linux Containers, is now generally avaialble. Readers will recall that AWS announced the beta of this product late last year. The increasing adoption of, and interest in, containers has led them to accelerate the availability of this product.

It can also be seen as a counter move to Google’s increasingly obvious intentions with Kubernetes. Google launched the Kubernetes initiative as an open source Docker container orchestration tool, recently it announced a deep partnership with competing container company CoreOS to tie Kubernetes into CoreOS’s solutions…
